Down East Wood Ducks News Release
Salem, Va. - Despite being no-hit through five innings, and trailing by a run in the ninth, the Wood Ducks forced extras, and raced past the Red Sox, 6-2 to win the series, Sunday.
Diosbel Arias was the catalyst for the Woodies (9-8, 59-28) offense, as he belted a bases-clearing triple in the tenth to give Down East their first lead, and drove in four runs in the ballgame.
The Red Sox (11-6, 36-48) got out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Nick Lovullo singled to left, and then Sammy Miranda doubled down the line in right to put two in scoring position. One batter later Tanner Nishioka came through with a sacrifice fly to left field to put the Red Sox ahead, 1-0.
Salem doubled their advantage against Collin Wiles in the fifth. Keith Curcio reached on a two-out walk, and then Pedro Castellanos grounded a ball off the third base bag to push a pair of runners into scoring position. One batter later, Ryan Fitzgerald lined an opposite field single to put Salem ahead, 2-0.
Wiles worked 4.2 innings, giving up two runs on six hits. He walked one and struck out three, and at one point retired ten in a row.
On the other side of things, Jhonathan Diaz was sensational for Salem. He retired 14 of the first 15 batters he faced, and did not allow a hit until Tyler Depreta-Johnson singled up the middle in the sixth. Franklin Rollin took his spot at first on a fielder's choice and then moved to third on a stolen base and a throwing error. After a walk to Josh Altmann, Arias came through with a single to right to put the Woodies on the board.
Diaz worked 5.2 innings, giving up a run on one hit. He walked two and struck out four, but did not factor in the decision.
The score would remain 2-1 Salem until the ninth. With Joan Martinez (loss, 2-3) on to close out the ballgame, he walked the bases loaded. With two outs and Yohel Pozo at the plate pinch hitting, Martinez missed outside on a 3-2 pitch to tie the ballgame at 2-2.
Jairo Beras (win, 1-0), who came on in the eighth inning, worked a scoreless ninth to send the ballgame to extra-innings.
In the tenth, Hasuan Viera started as a pinch runner. Rollin singled into left, and then Altmann walked to load the bases with nobody out. One batter later, Arias crushed a double to the gap in right-center, clearing the bases, and giving the Wood Ducks their first lead of the ballgame. Arias would come into score on a wild pitch one batter later to make it 6-2.
Joe Kuzia then worked a perfect ninth inning, striking out two, to seal the extra-inning victory.
The Wood Ducks continue their road trip in Myrtle Beach, Sunday at 6:05 p.m. when Alex Eubanks (7-2, 2.40) takes the mound for the Wood Ducks, against Pelicans right-hander Paul Richan (8-3, 4.15). The broadcast will begin at 5:50 p.m. on 960AM The Bull and online at 960thebull.com as well as the MiLB First Pitch and TuneIn Radio App.
