Wolves' Winning Streak Ends with 4-3 Loss to San Antonio

Rosemont, Ill. --- The Chicago Wolves four-game winning streak came to a close Saturday night as San Antonio posted 3 first-period goals and held on for a 4-3 victory before 10,913 fans at Allstate Arena.

Darren Haydar and Anton Rodin each delivered a goal and an assist for the Wolves (7-6-0-2), who played their first home game in three weeks. Mike Duco posted Chicago's other goal. Wolves goaltender Eddie Lack (2-4-2) rallied after a slow start to finish with 22 saves.

"They took advantage of their opportunities in the first period and we didn't," said Wolves head coach Craig MacTavish. "We battled back and gave ourselves a chance to win, but we fell a little short."

Mark Cullen (G, A), Bill Thomas (G, A) and Scott Timmins (2A) led the way for San Antonio, which raced out to a 3-0 lead in the opening 20 minutes. Wacey Rabbit and Greg Rallo added goals for the Rampage (7-9-0-0) while goaltender Brian Foster registered 31 saves.

Thomas opened the scoring as Bracken Kearns held the puck behind the net and found Thomas open in the slot. He lifted the puck over Lack's glove at the 4:05 mark of the first period.

The Rampage struck again at 10:14 of the first when Cullen set up Thomas at the half-boards and continued toward the net. Thomas fired a wrister that Cullen tipped past Lack for a 2-0 lead.

San Antonio added a short-handed goal 13 seconds before the end of the period. When the Wolves couldn't make connections on a power-play feed, the Rampage raced the other way with a two-on-one breakout. Timmins fed Rabbit, who deked Lack for his first goal of the year.

The Wolves opened the second period on the power play and took advantage. Foster (4-4-0) deflected Kevin Connauton's shot, but Haydar one-timed the rebound 38 seconds into the period for his seventh goal of the season.

San Antonio regained its 3-goal lead less than two minutes later as the Wolves couldn't gain control of the puck between the circles. Lack got a piece of Rallo's backhander, but not enough to keep it from getting in the net at the 2:32 mark.

Wolves rookie Rodin's speed generated the second Wolves goal. Rodin intercepted a pass in the Wolves end and zipped between two Rampage defensemen in the neutral zone to earn a breakaway goal that cut the lead to 4-2 at the 7:31 mark of the second period.

Duco's power-play goal pulled the Wolves within 4-3 at the 9:51 mark of the third period. The Wolves scoring sequence began during a 5-on-3 advantage, though Duco's close-range shot came with a one-man advantage. Haydar and Rodin earned assists on the play.

The Wolves return to action at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday night at Texas. Their next home game is an Illinois Lottery Cup contest against Peoria at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 26.
