Admirals Stonewalled by IceCaps; Split Weekend Serie
November 19, 2011 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Norfolk Admirals News Release
ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - Despite out-shooting them, 36-25, the Norfolk Admirals (10-7-0-1) fell to the St. John's IceCaps (12-3-3-0), 3-1, on Saturday night at Mile One Centre, splitting the two-game weekend series in Newfoundland. The Admirals now return to Norfolk for a six-game homestand beginning on Wednesday night at Scope against the Charlotte Checkers.
Cory Conacher was the lone Admiral to solve St. John's netminder Peter Mannino, who stopped 35 of 36 Norfolk shots - including all 18 he faced in the third period. Dustin Tokarski took the loss in net for Norfolk after stopping 22 of 25 shots.
St. John's took a 1-0 lead just 2:05 into the contest. Carl Klingberg skated into the slot and spotted Riley Holzapfel with a pass in the left circle. Holzapfel scored past the blocker side of Tokarski for a power play goal.
The IceCaps doubled their lead in the waning minutes of the opening frame. Spencer Machacek picked off an Admirals pass near the goalmouth and sent a quick shot through Tokarski's legs at 18:02 for a 2-0 St. John's lead.
The Admirals cut their deficit to 2-1 just 27 seconds into the second period on Conacher's ninth goal of the season. Conacher stole the puck from a St. John's defender in the attacking zone. The puck popped up in the air and bounced into the slot, but Conacher was able to settle it down before sending a shot into the net over the right shoulder of Mannino.
The IceCaps re-claimed their two goal lead 2:18 into the final frame on a two-on-one play. Garth Murray entered the attacking zone along the left wing and passed the puck to Kevin Clark in the slot. Clark held the puck until he reached the hashmarks and then returned it to Murray near the bottom of the left circle. Murray's quick shot eluded Tokarski's right leg and gave St. John's a 3-1 lead.
Norfolk pressed St. John's heavily in the third period, out-shooting the IceCaps, 18-4. However Mannino came up strong and did not allow the Admirals to draw any closer.
Dustin Tokarski (5-5-0) turned aside 22 of 25 shots for the loss. Peter Mannino (4-2-0) stopped 35 of 36 shots for the victory.
Norfolk was 0-2 on the power play. St. John's was 1-5.
The Admirals return to Scope on Wednesday drop the puck on a six-game homestand, beginning with a matchup against the Charlotte Checkers in the fourth game of the GEICO Challenge Cup. The puck drops at 7:15 p.m. in the second Admirals Value Night of the 2011-12 season.
