Chicago Wolves News Release
PEORIA, Ill.---The Chicago Wolves battled back from four two-goal deficits but were never able to even the score as they saw their season-high seven-game win streak snapped by the Peoria Rivermen, 5-4, at Carver Arena Saturday night.
Center Jason Krog led the way for Chicago (25-17-0-2) with a goal and two assists on the night, while left wing Brett Sterling, right wing Tim Stapleton and defenseman Paul Postma also tallied for the Wolves.
Peoria (22-17-1-3) opened scoring at 15:52 of the first period when defenseman Bryce Lampman took a slap shot from the boards at center ice. The shot took a wild bounce in front of Wolves netminder Kari Lehtonen and ricocheted into the net under Lehtonen's blocker.
Lehtonen (0-1-0) posted 32 saves in his first appearance on his conditioning stint from the Atlanta Thrashers.
Center Yan Stastny gave the Rivermen a 2-0 lead on a breakaway tally at 8:35 of the second period. Defenseman Tyson Strachan sent a pass up the ice to Stastny, who was waiting on the blueline and broke through the Wolves defenders before roofing a wrister up and under the crossbar.
Krog brought the Wolves to within one on an unassisted tally at 14:38 of the second. Intercepting a pass from a Rivermen defenseman, Krog picked up the puck, brought it to his backhand and squeezed a shot past Peoria goaltender Ben Bishop.
Bishop (14-8-2) stopped 28 of 32 shots he faced in the winning effort.
At 6:33 of the third period, right wing Adam Cracknell regained the two-goal lead for Peoria. Left wing Chris Porter took a high shot through traffic from the slot and Cracknell managed to get his stick on it to tip the puck in under the crossbar for the tally.
Sterling brought Chicago within one goal, once again, with a power-play marker at 8:20. Sterling received the puck from Krog and crashed the net, sliding the puck across the crease to his forehand and slipping it under Bishop.
Peoria responded quickly with a power-play tally of their own. Center Nicholas Drazenovic took a shot from the slot that ricocheted off the post and behind Lehtonen at 9:08 for the 4-2 lead.
Stapleton pulled the Wolves within one for the third time at 13:53 of the third. Right wing Anthony Stewart was moving the puck along the boards behind the net and then passed the puck off to a streaking Stapleton who one-timed a shot past Bishop, near-post.
Just 1:33 later, Peoria took a 5-3 lead when center Derek Armstrong dished the puck to Julian Talbot who wristed a shot just over Lehtonen's shoulder, off the post and into the net.
With the Wolves net empty at 17:32, Postma ripped a shot from the point that flew past Bishop to bring the Wolves within one for the fourth time of the night and close out the scoring, 5-4.
The Wolves head back to the Allstate Arena to conclude their weekend against the Grand Rapids Griffins, tomorrow at 3 p.m.
