Adirondack Phantoms News Release

GLENS FALLS, NY - Zach Boychuk broke a 2-2 tie with 4:02 left in the third period as the Albany River Rats edged the Adirondack Phantoms 3-2 Saturday night in front of a standing-room only crowd of 5,309 fans at the Glens Falls Civic Center.

There were two fights in a scoreless first period as Logan Stephenson dropped the gloves with Nicolas Blanchard 65 seconds into the game and Matt Clackson fought Zack FitzGerald later in the frame; FitzGerald was given a game misconduct for not having the fight strap on his jersey tied down. Adirondack was held to a season-low one shot on goal in the period, while the River Rats fired 12 shots on Phantoms goaltender John Grahame.

Albany opened the scoring in the second period when Blanchard shoveled a centering pass from Jerome Samson into the net at 4:38 for a power play goal. But the Phantoms responded with a power play goal of their own courtesy of David Laliberte's seventh goal of the year; Andreas Nodl set up the goal with a smart cross-crease pass to the far post to find Laliberte at 13:37.

The Phantoms were out-shot 28-15 through the first forty minutes of the game, but in the third period they out-shot Albany 13-5. The River Rats scored their second power play goal of the night to take a 2-1 lead at 4:35 on Jacob MicFlikier's 10th of the season, forcing the hosts to rally again. Adirondack did so at 10:47 when rookie defenseman Joonas Lehtivuori stepped in from the blue line and hammered a one-timer from the slot underneath the glove of goalie Justin Peters to tie the game at 2-2. As the game looked as though it was headed to overtime, Rats rookie Zach Boychuk found a late winner when he zipped a wrist shot into the not from the low slot at 15:58, giving Albany a 3-2 win.

Justin Peters stopped 26-of-28 shots to record the victory as Albany improved to 24-16-3-2 this year. John Grahame made 33 saves on 36 shots, but was tagged with the loss as Adirondack fell to 20-19-2-1 on the year. The River Rats out-shot the Phantoms 36-28 in the game and went 2-for-6 on the power play; Adirondack was 1-for-4 with the man-advantage.

The Phantoms will head west to face the Rochester Americans on Sunday, January 24th at 5:00 pm at Blue Cross Arena; the game will be televised locally on Time Warner Cable Channel 3 (TWC-3). Adirondack returns home on Friday, January 29th as they host the Binghamton Senators for a 7:30 pm face off at the Civic Center.
