Syracuse Crunch News Release

Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Crunch got to within one goal of tying the game on Dan Fritsche's marker with 35 seconds left in regulation, but could not tally the equalizer as they fell to the Worcester Sharks by a 5-4 count tonight at the War Memorial at Oncenter. The loss was the Crunch's third straight at home and fourth straight overall.

Fritsche, Brendan Bell and Derek MacKenzie all tallied a goal and an assist, as the Crunch rallied back from deficits of 4-1 and 5-2 to fall just short.

AHL All-Star and rookie leading scorer Logan Couture scored twice for Worcester, including the Sharks' only power play goal, giving him 18 goals in 32 games played this season.

Grant Clitsome got the Crunch off to a good start, shuffling a wrister on net from the point that eluded Alex Stalock to make it 1-0 four minutes into the game.

Worcester answered back with four unanswered goals, including both of Couture's tallies. Andrew Desjardins scored his 12th of the year with five and a half minutes left in the first and Nick Petrecki notched his first of the year on a bad angle shot that eluded Dan LaCosta just under seven minutes into second stanza to extend Worcester's lead to 4-1. Kevin Lalande replaced LaCosta after that.

Derek MacKenzie scored for the fourth straight game when he slammed home a rebound from the top of the crease past Stalock on a no-look feed from Bates Battaglia from behind the goal line to make it 4-2 with just over eight minutes left in the second.

Jamie McGinn gave Worcester back the three-goal lead when he intercepted a Nick Holden cross-ice pass while shorthanded, broke in alone and beat Lalande with a backhand to push it to 5-2 just under two minutes later.

Brendan Bell gave the Crunch some hope when his rip from the left point hit a body in front and found its way past Stalock to make it a 5-3 game at the 3:37 mark of the third period.

Fritsche tallied his tenth of the year with 35 seconds left in regulation, but the Crunch could not bury the equalizer.
