
'Wolves Sweep Defenders, Win Five Straight

The SeaWolves won their fifth straight game as they completed a three-game series sweep of the Connecticut Defenders on Sunday afternoon at Dodd Stadium, 7-4. The 'Wolves improved to 26-12 following the all-star break and it was the sixth series sweep of the season for Erie.
The SeaWolves struck first in the top of the first inning against Connecticut starter Garrett Broshius. Will Rhymes led off the game with a single to left for his league leading 156th hit of the season. With one out, Deik Scram single to put runners on the corners. With two outs and a 1-2 count, Ryan Roberson slammed his team-leading 23rd home run to put Erie ahead 3-0.
The Defenders struck right back in the bottom of the first to tie the game against Erie starter Josh Rainwater. Antoan Richardson tripled with one out and scored on a wild pitch to make it a 3-1 game. Carlos Sosa then walked and Adam Witter connected on his 18th home run over the wall in right, tying the game at 3-3.
Erie regained the lead in the top of the third inning when, with one out, Scram connected on his second hit of the game, a solo home run over the wall in right for a 4-3 lead.
In the top of the fifth, Casper Wells led off and slammed his 16th home run of the season and his second in as many games to put the SeaWolves up 5-3. Wells now has 26 home runs between West Michigan and Erie.
Erie then went ahead 6-3 in the top of the seventh. Adrian Casanova led off with a single, his second hit of the game. Rhymes laid down a sacrifice bunt, moving Casanova into scoring position. Casanova then scored on an RBI double down the left field line by Wells to put Erie back ahead by three runs.
The Defenders struck back in the bottom of the eighth against reliever Danny Zell. Adam Witter led off with a double and he scored on a one-out single by Simon Klink to make it a 6-4 game.
The 'Wolves added an insurance run to go back ahead by three in the top of the ninth against reliever Ronnie Ray. Caonabo Cosme led off with a single and he was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Casanova. Cosme moved to third on a groundout by Rhymes and he would score on an error by the first baseman Klink for a 7-4 lead.
Brendan Wise picked up his third save of the season as he worked the final 1.1 innings scoreless.
Rainwater (10-6) worked 6.2 innings, allowing three runs on six hits with four walks and a strikeout. He is Erie's first pitcher to 10 wins and he is now in a tie for eighth all-time in SeaWolves history with 10 wins.
The SeaWolves finished the season series with the Defenders winning five of the six games.
