Defenders Fall Again To Erie

NORWICH, CT- In front of nearly 5,000 fans, the Defenders lost another close one to the Erie SeaWolves on the final home game of the 2008 season, 7-4.

Garrett Broshuis toed the rubber for the Defs and he struggled right out of the gate. After giving up two singles and recording two outs, Ryan Roberson delivered a three-run bomb to left field to give Erie a 3-0 advantage.

Connecticut would get even in the last of the first as Antoan Richardson smoked a triple to right field and scored on a wild pitch. Carlos Sosa drew a walk and Adam Witter obliterated a 2-0 fastball to right field to square the game at 3-3.

Deik Scram launched a solo homer in the top of the third, Casper Wells blasted a one-run shot in the fifth and added an RBI double in the seventh to give the Wolves a 6-3 lead.

The Defenders would finally get on the board again after six scoreless frames. In the last of the eighth, Adam Witter's leadoff double turned into a run when Simon Klink stroked a single to left. Through eight, the Defs trailed 6-4.

Erie got an insurance run in the top of the ninth on an RBI groundout and the Defenders went quietly in the ninth as Kyle Haines bounced into a game-ending 1-6-3 double play.

Broshuis was credited with his ninth loss to drop his record to 13-9, Josh Rainwater earned his tenth win and Brendan Wise locked down his third save.
