Wieters Waves Goodbye To Binghamton

(Bowie, MD) - The Baysox got back on track Sunday night, taking the series finale 4-2 in Binghamton. Sunday was the final regular season matchup between the teams, the Mets winning the season series five games to four. David Hernandez allowed two runs on four hits through 7.0 innings of work, improving to 9-4 on the year. Matt Wieters went 2-for-3 with a homerun and a walk and Ryan Finan chipped in two hits and an RBI to fuel the Baysox offense to the victory.

Matt Wieters got the Baysox rolling with a two-run homer in the top of the first inning. Sebastien Boucher led off with a single down the right field line. Carlos Roajs hit a ground ball to first and Mike Carp started a potential double play, but Jose Coronado threw the ball away on the way back to allow Rojas to reach second. Nolan Reimold went down on strikes for the first out of the inning before Wieters smashed a two-run homer to left field to put the Baysox on top.

The Mets got a run back in the bottom of the inning when Fernando Martinez led off with a walk. Peeter Ramos hit a single up the middle to move Martinez to third but then Wieters threw Ramos out stealing for the first out. Mike Carp drew a walk to put runners on the corners and Caleb Stewart grounded out to short, allowing Martinez to come in and cut the Bowie lead to 2-1.

Binghamton pulled even with a run in the bottom of the second. Ambiorix Concepcion led off with a base hit to left field and stole second base before Shawn Bowman went down on strikes for the first out. The strikeout pitch evaded Wieters behind the plate, allowing Concepcion to take third base. Jonathan Malo walked to put runners on the corners and Jose Coronado grounded out to second, bringing Concepcion in to tie the game at 2-2.

The Baysox hung two more runs on the board in time to give Hernandez his ninth win of the year. Carlos Rojas led off the top of the eighth with a base hit up the middle, Nolan Reimold singled to left field, and Wieters drew a walk to load the bases. Ryan Finan slapped a base hit through the hole at short and Rojas came in to score, keeping the bases loaded. Steve Torrealba picked up a one-out single to left field, plating Reimold and giving Bowie a 4-2 lead. Mike Rodriguez grounded into a double play to end the inning, but the Baysox had all they needed.

Rommie Lewis retired the first out in the bottom of the eighth before Julio Manon took over to work 1.2 perfect innings to earn his league-leading 31st save of the year. With the victory, the Baysox improve to 80-55 on the year. They lead the Akron Aeros by 5.0 games for first place in the Southern Division. The Baysox are looking to secure home field advantage in the first round of the playoffs with seven games left to play. RHP Chris Tillman (9-4, 3.32 ERA) goes up against Trenton RHP Jason Jones (13-5, 2.79 ERA) when the Baysox return to Bowie Tuesday night.

The Bowie Baysox are out to Beat The Streaks in their 16th season as the "AA" affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. The Baysox have not reached the postseason since 1997 and have never reached the Eastern League Championship.
