Erie SeaWolves News Release
The SeaWolves took down the Akron Aeros on Sunday afternoon at Jerry Uht Park, 7-2, completing a three-game of the top team in the league.
Akron struck first against Erie starter Luis Marte in the top of the first inning. Jose Constanza led off the game with a base hit, and Carlos Rivera and Beau Mills drew back-to-back walks to load the bases for Carlos Santana. Santana connected on a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Constanza for a 1-0 lead. Marte would get out of the inning with no further damage.
Erie would strike back in the bottom of the third against Akron starter Jeanmar Gomez. Max Leon led off with a single but was put out at second on a fielder's choice off the bat of Brennan Boesch. With Boesch on first with two outs, Alex Avila walked to keep the inning alive. Andy Dirks singed home Boesch, tying the game at 1-1. Mike Hollimon followed with a triple to dead center, plating Avila and Dirks, giving the âWolves a 3-1 lead. Hollimon attempted to score for an inside the park home run but was thrown out at the plate. Since returning from the disabled list, Hollimon is 5-for-15 with two home runs and seven RBI.
Erie added to its lead in the bottom of the fourth. Cale Iorg led off with a single and advanced to second on a groundout by Joe Tucker. Scott Sizemore singled home Iorg for a 4-1 lead. Leon followed with his second hit of the game to put a pair on base. In the series against Akron, Leon went 8-for-13 at the plate with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored. With two outs, Ryan Strieby tripled to the gap in right-center, bringing home Sizemore and Leon for a 6-1 lead. Strieby now leads the team with 37 RBI. Avila capped the day's scoring for the âWolves with a base hit, plating Strieby for a 7-1 lead.
From that point on, Marte was in cruse control as he went seven innings, allowing a run on two hits with four walks and three strikeouts. He snapped a three-game losing streak and improved his record to 3-5 on the season.
Akron would get a run back in the top of the eighth against reliever Ramon Garcia to make it 7-2. Garcia retired the final three hitters in the eighth after giving up the run and Brett Jensen tossed a scoreless ninth to finish off the sweep.
The sweep was Erie's sixth of the season and the win improved the âWolves to 5-2 against Akron. Erie is now 29-19 and has the second-best record in the Eastern League. The âWolves are now just three games out of first in the EL South.
The âWolves also improved to 19-7 at Jerry Uht Park, the best home record in the league.
Erie continues its seven-game homestand on Monday night as the Altoona Curve come to town for a four-game series.
