Trenton Thunder News Release
(Trenton, NJ)- Trenton Second Baseman Chris Malec had the go-ahead RBI single in the sixth inning to lift the Thunder to a 4-1 win over Altoona on Sunday afternoon from Waterfront Park. Trenton swept the three-game series from the Curve, and has now won eight of its last 10 games.
With the score tied at 1-1 in the sixth inning, Trenton (25-22) scored the go-ahead two runs to take a 3-1 lead. With Thunder Left fielder James Cooper at second base and two outs in the frame, Second baseman Chris Malec connected on an RBI single off of Altoona Starting Pitcher Kyle Bloom (0-3) to give the Thunder the lead. Pinch-hitter Kevin Smith followed Malec with an RBI single to increase the lead to 3-1. The Thunder extended the lead to 4-1 in the seventh inning on an RBI groundout by Third baseman Marcos Vechionacci.
The Thunder jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Shortstop Justin Snyder walked to lead-off the bottom of the first inning, and advanced to third base on an error by Altoona First baseman Jason Delaney. He scored on a sacrifice fly RBI by Second baseman Chris Malec. Altoona (15-34) tied the game in the top of the third inning on an RBI infield single by Delaney.
Trenton Starting Pitcher Zach McAllister (4-2) tossed 6 2/3 innings to pick up the win. He scattered four hits and one run. He struck out a season-high 10 and walked three batters. McAllister's career high in strikeouts is 11. Those 11 strikeouts came in a win against Greenville 5/15/08. It was the first Thunder player to strike out 10 batters since RHP George Kontos struck out 13 Altoona batters on July 31st, 2008. Trenton Reliever Kanekoa Texeira tossed 2 1/3 perfect innings in relief of McAllister to pick up his first save of the season. Bloom allowed four hits and three runs (two earned) in 5 2/3 innings to take the loss. No player on either team had a multi-hit game.
Trenton continues its home-stand on Monday night against the Bowie Baysox (Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles). Trenton's Starting Pitcher is TBD. RHP John Mariotti (0-2, 4.64) will start for Bowie. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
