
'Wolves Fall in Series Opener to Portland

The SeaWolves opened a six-game home stand with the Portland Sea Dogs on Tuesday night at took a loss, 4-3.
The Sea Dogs struck first in the top of the third inning against Erie starter Andy Oliver. Nate Spears led off with a single and Ray Chang singled with one out putting runners on first and second for Luis Exposito. Exposito doubled to the gap in left center, scoring both Spears and Chang, giving the Sea Dogs a 2-0 lead. With two outs, Yamaico Navarro doubled home Exposito for a 3-0 Portland lead.
The âWolves would get on the board in the bottom of the fourth against Portland starter Stephen Fife. With two outs, Deik Scram, in his first game back from Triple-A Toledo, singled to right and advanced to second on a balk. Cesar Nicolas singled home Scram picking up 33rd RBI, cutting the Portland lead down to two at 3-1.
Erie then tied the game in the bottom of the fifth. Audy Ciriaco and Cale Iorg reached on back-to-back infield singles to start the inning. Andy Bouchie singled to center, scoring Ciriaco, making it a one-run game at 3-2. Iorg advanced to third on a Justin Henry flyout and scored on a sacrifice fly by Andy Dirks, tying the game at 3-3.
The game remained tied until the top of the ninth. Jared Gayhart, who came into the game in the seventh, retired the first six hitters he faced before giving up a one-out single to Matt Sheely. With Spears hitting, Sheely was thrown out by Bouchie trying to steal second. Spears then walked with two outs, Ryan Khoury single and Chang walked to load the bases for Exposito. Gayhart hit Exposito on to bring home the game-winning run for Portland.
Erie attempted to rally against reliever Bryce Cox in the bottom of the ninth. Bouchie singled with one out and Henry walked to put the tying run at second and the winning run at first. Cox struck out Dirks and Josh Burrus to end the game, picking up his seventh save.
Gayhart took the loss for the âWolves, dropping his record to 0-3.
Oliver took a no-decision going five-plus innings, allowing three runs on nine hits with two walks and five strikeouts. He had a streak of 21.2 consecutive innings without a walk snapped when he walked back-to-back to start the sixth.
