Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release

RICHMOND, VA - The Richmond Flying Squirrels cracked three solo-home runs en route to a, 6-2, win over the New Britain Rock Cats in front of 4,819 at The Diamond on Tuesday night.

The Squirrels' offense was sparked by an unlikely source as Richmond grabbed the lead against New Britain right-hander Mike McCardell in the first inning. Skyler Stromsmoe lifted his first home run of the season to right field, the solo-home run putting Richmond in front, 1-0. The home run for Stromsmoe was just the fifth of his professional career.

The long-ball led the way again in the second, as the Squirrels doubled their advantage. Jackson Williams teed off on a 3-2 pitch from McCardell and belted it to left field. His second homer of the season increased the Richmond lead to 2-0.

Brandon Crawford marked the first time in franchise history that the Squirrels had recorded three home runs in the same game when he led off the fourth inning with a blast to right field. Crawford's sixth of the season stretched the Squirrels' advantage to 3-0. Richmond wasn't done in the inning however, as Michael Ambort followed the home run with a single. Thomas Neal then singled into right-center field to put runners at the corners with one out. Clay Timpner forced Neal with a groundout, but Ambort scored to push the Richmond advantage to 4-0.

Richmond finally chased McCardell as they touched him up for two more runs in the sixth inning. Crawford started the uprising with a double into the alley in right-center field. Ambort followed with a single to put two aboard. A batter later, Neal ended a lengthy confrontation with a two-run single back up the middle to plate both runners. The single was the third of the night for Neal and signaled the end of the evening for McCardell.

McCardell (0-6) was charged with six earned runs over 5 1/3 innings of work. He surrendered nine hits, walked none and struck out for as he remained winless on the year.

Meanwhile, Squirrels' right-hander Daryl Maday cruised through his first six innings, shutting out the Rock Cats on just two hits. They were able to scratch across a pair of runs against him before his departure after seven innings. Maday (8-2) claimed his eighth victory of the season, allowing just five hits, walking none and striking out two. His win allowed him to tie Altoona's Jared Hughes for the league lead in victories.

Game two of the series is scheduled for 7:05 PM on Wednesday night at The Diamond. RHP David Mixon (5-3, 3.32) will make the start for Richmond against RHP Deolis Guerra (1-1, 3.07) for New Britain.
