TONIGHT: The Richmond Flying Squirrels and New Britain Rock Cats will meet in the opener of a three-game series...The Flying Squirrels dropped the rubber match of a three-game series with the Trenton Thunder, losing the finale of the series 10-2 at Waterfront Park on Sunday afternoon.
TONIGHT'S STARTER: Right-hander Daryl Maday gets the start in the opener of the series for the Flying Squirrels...Suffered his second consecutive loss 6/2 against Harrisburg...Allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits in five innings...Struck out six batters and walked two...Allowed the leadoff batter to reach once in five innings (2nd)...Scored one of the two runs...Gave up a home run to Danny Espinosa in the fifth inning...First home run allowed this season...Threw 97 pitches, 60 strikes...Went three balls in the count to seven of the 22 batters he faced...Threw first pitch strikes to 13 of the 22 batters he faced...Threw six pitches or more to seven of the 22 batters he faced...Recorded five fly outs and four ground outs...Six strike outs were a season high...Four of the last five runs he has allowed have come in the first two innings...Has allowed two runs or fewer in nine of his 11 starts...Leads the Eastern League with a 1.69 ERA)...Attempting to become the second EL pitcher to eight wins (Jared Hughes)...Is 4-0 with a 1.93 ERA in six career starts against New Britain.
Right-hander Mike McCardell gets the nod in the opener of the series for the Rock Cats...Received a no-decision in his last outing even though he allowed just two runs, one earned, on six hits over a season-long eight innings...Struck out three and walked one...Was his fifth quality start in 11 outings...Has pitched into the sixth inning in nine of his 11 starts...Is seventh in the Eastern League in innings pitched (65 1/3)...Has allowed the fourth-most hits in the league (73)..Is 0-1 with a 3.46 ERA in two starts against Richmond...Has allowed five runs on 15 hits over 13 innings of work against the Flying Squirrels...Credited with a complete game but also took the loss after allowing two runs on five hits in his last start against Richmond in game two of a double-header 4/27 at New Britain Stadium...Still in search of his first win of the season...Earned the win in five of his nine starts with New Britain last season...Selected by MIN in the 6th round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft...Attended Kutztown University.
ROCKING THE CATS: Richmond is 6-0 against New Britain this season...The Flying Squirrels swept a pair of three-game series from the Rock Cats including one at The Diamond (4/19-4/21) and one at New Britain Stadium (4/26-4/28)...Half of the club's wins in April came against New Britain...Dating back to last season, the San Francisco Giants Double-A affiliate is 22-4 versus the Rock Cats.
OFF DAY AFTER A DAY OFF?: The Flying Squirrels are 2-1 after scheduled off days...Richmond dropped it's last contest after an off day 5/18 against Erie...The club's next scheduled day off is 6/21.
SERIES OF LOSSES: With Sunday's loss to the Thunder, the Flying Squirrels fell to 0-5-2 over their last seven series including getting swept by Harrisburg 6/1-6/3...The last series victory came after taking two-of-three at Bowie 5/10-5/12.
SUBMERSED: At 28-29, the Flying Squirrels are under the .500 mark for the first time since 4/25 when the club was 8-9...After starting the season 13-3 at home, Richmond has lost 10 of its last 12 games at The Diamond.
LONG TIME SINCE THE LONG BALL: Outfielder Darren Ford's solo home run leading off the fifth inning on Sunday was the first hit by a Flying Squirrel batter since Brandon Crawford's homer in the top of the eighth inning at Binghamton 5/24 (12 games)...The last two home runs hit at The Diamond by a Flying Squirrel were both inside-the-park home runs...The last Flying Squirrel home run hit out of The Diamond was hit by Nick Noonan 5/3 against Bowie...Richmond's 23 home runs are the fewest of any club in the Eastern League...New Britain has hit the second-fewest (29)...Recently promoted Florida Marlins' prospect Mike Stanton hit 21 home runs in 52 games with Double-A Jacksonville.
DRIED CLAY: Outfielder Clay Timpner was held hitless over the three-game series at Trenton marking the first time this season that the 26-year-old has failed to get a hit in three consecutive games...He was 0-for-11 in the set with a run scored, two walks, and three strike outs...Timpner's average dipped from .354 to .326 over the course of the series...He still ranks second in the Eastern League in batting average trailing only Altoona's Alex Presley (.368).
HERE'S THE CATCH: Catcher Jackson Williams is 3-for-6 with a double and three RBI after snapping an 0-for-27 skid at the plate...His RBI double in the sixth inning on Saturday (6/5) was his first hit since an infield single in his third at-bat at Binghamton on 5/24...It was his first RBIs since 5/19 against Erie (11 games)...The 24-year-old began the season with an 11-game hit streak (14-for-34)...His average has dropped from .412 to .187 since his hit streak came to an end...Williams sat out the final two games of the series with Harrisburg, marking the first time this season he not appeared in consecutive games.
DOUBLETREE DOWNTOWN DOUBLE PLAYS: The Richmond Flying Squirrels have turned 72 double plays in 57 games including six on 5/7 in Harrisburg...The club leads the Eastern League in double plays turned and has not gone more than two games without turning a double play.
CFS STAT OF THE NIGHT: The 10 runs allowed by the Flying Squirrels on Sunday matched the most given up by the club this season...It was the third time that Richmond pitching allowed 10 runs and first since 5/28 against Bowie...The 15 hits allowed were the second-most this season...The club gave up 16 hits to Erie 5/19.
