Sudbury Wolves News Release
The Sudbury Wolves played a solid road game but dropped a 4-3 decision to the Petes in Peterborough on Thursday night.
The Wolves trailed 1-0 in the first period but Matt Schmalz scored his 23rd goal of the season to tie the contest. Schmalz, 18, was a surprise starter for the Wolves as the big forward suffered a vicious head-shot by Barrie's Garrett Hooey on Sunday night in Sudbury. Hooey was assessed a five minute major penalty and a game misconduct by the game's official but the Colt's forward was not assessed a suspension by the league.
The Wolves fell behind 3-1 in the second period before Brody Silk and Brady Pataki scored to once again tie the contest 3-3 after the second period of play. The Wolves fired 18 shots on the Petes goal in the second period.
The Wolves' young defenceman Cole Mayo was assessed a slew-foot major penalty early in the third period and the Wolves were successful in killing-off the entire five minute man advantage. The penalty marked the third slew-foot penalty that the Wolves have been assessed in the last three weeks. Mayo will automatically be suspended for a minimum of two games by the league.
Wolves rookie Ivan Kashtanov was assessed an untimely hooking penalty in the Petes zone with less than nine minutes to play in the third period, and the Petes wasted little time in scoring the game winner on the power play. The Wolves had a power play opportunity late in the game and came close with the goalie-out, but, the young Wolves couldn't tie the score.
The Wolves finished 0 for 4 on the power play while the Petes were 2 for 5 with the man advantage. Shots on goal finished 41-38 in favour of the Petes. Wolves' captain Brody Silk was named the game's second star. Sam Tanguay was solid in goal for the Wolves making 37 saves on 41 shots.
The Wolves were without the services of Jacob Harris and Troy Timpano who remain sidelined with injuries. Chad Heffernan played for the Wolves for the first time in three weeks as he has recovered from his injury.
The Wolves will be looking to rebound Friday night when they travel to Kingston to play Sam Bennett and the Frontenacs.
