Saginaw Spirit News Release
The Saginaw Spirit took the ice against the Ottawa 67's at the Dow Event Center after a four game road stretch last week. The 67's outshined the Spirit and took a 5-0 win over Saginaw due to some superb goaltending by Ottawa's Leo Lazarev.
The 67's opened the game's scoring early in the first period after Sam Studnicka beat Saginaw's starting goaltender Evan Cormier. Studnicka's goal allowed the 67's to take the first lead of the night, putting the score to 1-0 over the Spirit. Trent Mallette and Curtis Meighan were credited with the assists on the play. The Spirit had multiple scoring opportunities against Ottawa's starting goaltender Leo Lazarev, taking 9 shots on goal during the first period. However, Saginaw was unlucky in finding the back of the net. The 67's finished the period outshooting the Spirit, tallying a total of 10 shots on goal during the first 20 minutes of play.
Ottawa continued their scoring streak well into the second, netting three goals against Saginaw in the period. Nathan Todd cushioned the 67's lead at 6:30 of the second, making it a 2-0 game with the help of Travis Konecny and Nevin Guy. Shortly after Nathan Todd won the face off in Saginaw's zone and fed the puck to Evan de Haan who quickly implemented a 3-0 lead over the Spirit. Ottawa scored one more time in the second period for good measure, giving way to a 4-0 lead for the 67's after 40 minutes. Shots on goal in the second period favored the home team 14-11.
Jeremiah Addison scored one more time for Ottawa before the final buzzer sounded, giving way to a 5-0 lead over Saginaw. Addison's goal came at 6:08 of the third period as both the Spirit and the 67's were riding out penalties with some 4-on-4 hockey. Dante Salituro and Nevin Guy assisted the play. Final shots on goal favored the Saginaw Spirit 31-30.
The Saginaw Spirit will return to the Dow Event Center to wrap up the month of February at home on Saturday, the 28th. The London Knights will face off against the Spirit for Faith Night which is scheduled to begin at 7:11 p.m. The Saginaw Spirit will entertain the Plymouth Whalers at the Dow Event Center on Tuesday morning for Education Day. Puck is scheduled to drop at 10:45 a.m.
