Oshawa Generals News Release

It was quite the game on home ice tonight as your Oshawa Generals took on the Belleville Bulls for the fifth time this season. Fights, broken glass, and big points were all a part of tonight's 8-4 win over the Bulls.

The first period of tonight's game was a big one for the Generals, who managed to score two goals in the first frame. Bradley Latour opened the scoring, putting a quick one past Connor Hicks at 4:07. Assists on his goal were from Cole Cassels and Hunter Smith. At 14:04, the Bulls tied things up with a goal from Bulls top scorer, Jordan Subban. Manchurek and Bricknell dropped the gloves for what seemed like an extended fight and both players sat for five minutes each for fighting. Before the period closed, Cassels gave the Generals a 2-1 lead on a goal assisted by Latour and Smith. Smith, Cassels, and Latour showed what their line was made of tonight and all three players ended the period with two points apiece. The Generals dominated the first period, outshooting their opponent 16-9 and holding a 2-1 lead.

The second period was not short on action as the Generals were fighting hard to continue their lead and the Bulls were looking to catch up to the Generals. The Bulls picked up their speed in the second, clearly looking to tie things up. At 6:08 however, the Generals had a one man advantage thanks to an unsportsmanlike conduct call to Gustavsen. Aidan Wallace and Mitch Vande Sompel had an amazing shorthanded, joint opportunity but couldn't get the puck past Hicks. A short time later, McCarron also had a close chance, but no goals were scored. At 13:48, Hunter Smith served a Generals penalty for too many men on the ice. The Generals killed it off and maintained their lead. Just minutes before the end of the period, Josh Brown took a huge hit that sent a Belleville player through the glass at the GM Centre. The period ended early as a result of the hit and the remaining minutes were tacked onto the third period. The second frame ended with the Generals up 2-1 over the Bulls.

Before the third period could begin, 3:22 seconds of the second period was left to play, and it proved to be a very valuable 3:22 for both sides. Matt Mistele scored the third Generals goal of the night in this time and Brett Welychka scored the second Belleville goal of the game, narrowing the Generals lead to 3-2. It was a quick transition right into the third period, the period where things took off for your Generals. Five Oshawa goals were scored in the third frame, and it was a period you had to see to believe. Just 47 seconds in, Matt Mistle scored his second goal of the game, assisted by McCarron and Lindberg. At 6:17, Vande Sompel was looking for a goal and put the fifth Generals goal of the game past Hicks, assisted by Anthony Cirelli. Just over two minutes later, Kenny Huether was in the perfect position and Vande Sompel fed him the puck, giving the Generals a 6-3 lead over the Bulls. Aidan Wallace also picked up an assist on the goal. Saigeon retaliated just a couple minutes later and put a goal assisted by Luff past Brodeur.

Despite the 6-3 lead over the Bulls, the Generals weren't done and at 11:38, Smith scored lucky goal number seven, assisted by Latour and Cassels. The eighth and final Generals goal of the night was scored by Brent Pedersen and came assisted from Vande Sompel and Michael Turner. Not ready to give up, the Bulls managed one more goal at 18:53, this time scored by Cramarossa. The Generals came out for a win tonight and in finding the win, secured the Eastern Conference title for this season. Jeremy Brodeur earned his 10th win of the season and it was a great chance to tack on points for many of our players. The final score tonight was 8-4 in favour of your Generals and the Bulls were outshot 39-25. The Generals take on the Bulls tomorrow night in Belleville and it is sure to be an intense game, especially following the 8-4 win tonight. The team returns to home ice this Sunday, Mar. 1 to take on the Peterborough Petes at 6:05 P.M.
