'Wolves Drop Series Opener to Mets 3-1

The SeaWolves could not get the bats going on Friday night at Jerry Uht Park as they dropped the series opener to the Binghamton Mets 3-1.

The SeaWolves scored first in the bottom of the third against Mets starter Mark Cohoon. Michael Rockett reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second on a Jamie Johnson groundout. Niuman Romero singled home Rockett for a 1-0 Erie lead.

Binghamton tied the game in the top of the fifth against Erie starter Kelvin De La Cruz. With one out, Rylan Sandoval cracked a solo home run, his first, to left, making it a 1-1 game.

The Mets took their first lead of the game in the seventh. With one out, De La Cruz walked Juan Centeno and Joe Bonfe and was lifted in favor of Jared Gayhart. Gayhart failed to find the strike zone, walking Sandoval and Pedro Zapata putting the Mets ahead 2-1.

Binghamton added a lead in the top of the eighth against reliever Ryan Robowski for a 3-1 advantage. Erie could get no closer.

De La Cruz (1-2) took the loss allowing two runs on three this with three walks and nine strikeouts. The nine strikeouts was one-shy of a career-high that he set while pitching with Class-A Kinston in 2009.

Cohoon (2-2) earned the win tossing six innings, allowing a run on four hits with four walks and three strikeouts.

The SeaWolves and Mets continue a three-game series on Saturday afternoon at Jerry Uht Park.1:35 First Pitch. Righty James Avery (2-1, 2.87 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against RHP Collin McHugh (3-1, 1.59 ERA).
