Akron RubberDucks News Release
Akron, OH - Akron's Thomas Neal delivered an RBI double in the bottom of the 7th inning to break a 1-1 deadlock, and lift the Aeros to a 2-1 victory over the Altoona Curve on a chilly Friday night at Canal Park.
Neal struck out in his first two at-bats, but rallied to drive home the go-ahead run finishing the night going 1-3. His double to right in the 7th off Kris Harvey (0-1) drove in designated hitter Adam Abraham.
Earlier in the inning, Abraham led off with a double to center to spark the Aeros attack in the bottom 7th.
Neal, who served as the Aeros right fielder Friday, raised his average to .295 as he inches closer to the .300 mark. He has hit safely in seven of his last eight games, going 11-29 (.379) over that stretch. Neal now has five doubles on the season.
Aeros right hander Bryan Price (1-0), who allowed a run to score in relief of Giovanni Soto to tie the game in the top of the 6th, came back strong by striking out five of the nine Curve batters he faced. Price's final inning included striking out the side in the 8th to notch his first win of the season.
The Aeros (12-6) have taken two of three games against the Curve this season, and currently carry a three-game winning streak. With the win, the Aeros are six gmes over .500 for the first time this season.
The Curve (8-11) outhit the Aeros 6-5, yet were unable to match their run output. Centerfielder Robbie Grossman went 2-3 with a walk and a stolen base to lead the Curve attack.
Grossman was driven in on a infield single by Adalberto Santos off Price which prevented a winning decision for Aeros starter Soto, who worked 5 2/3 innings and allowed only five hits. Soto, who enjoyed his longest outing of the year, did not walk a batter and struck out four. His season ERA now stands at 4.05.
Abraham went 2-4 for the Aeros offense Friday, singling, doubling, and scoring a run. Catcher Roberto Perez reached base twice in three plate appearances and drove in the Aeros first run in the 5th on a triple. It gave Perez his first triple of the year and his fifth in four professional seasons.
The Aeros will face the Curve again in the second game of their seven-game homestand at Canal Park on Saturday at 1:05. LHP Eric Berger (0-3, 6.92) will start for the Aeros, while the Curve will send LHP Kris Johnson (0-0, 1.59) to the mound. All Aeros games are broadcast on Fox Sports 1350 AM and online at www.akronaeros.com. For more information, please call the Aeros at 330-253-5151.
