'Wolves Drop Series Opener in Extras

The SeaWolves suffered a tough loss on Monday night in Altoona as they let a late lead slip away, falling to the Curve 4-3 in 10 innings.

The SeaWolves jumped ahead on Curve starter Adrian Sampson in the top of the second inning. Ramon Cabrera led off with a walk and moved into scoring position on a Dean Green single to the opposite-field. Francisco Martinez followed with an RBI single to left-center for a 1-0 lead. Dixon Machado sent a double down the right field line, scoring Green for a 2-0 lead. Martinez came home to score on a Jamie Johnson sacrifice fly making it 3-0.

Erie starter Wilsen Palacios held Altoona to just one hit over five shutout innings, however, the Curve got on the board in the sixth. Gift Ngoepe led off with a triple and scored on an Alen Hanson double making it 3-1. Hanson scored on a two-out RBI knock by Matt Curry making it a one-run game.

The SeaWolves held the lead until the ninth inning. Dan Gamache doubled with one out off of Angel Nesbit to put the tying run on base. Nesbitt has retired the first five hitters he faced until the double. With two outs, Carlos Paulino singled home Gamache tying the game.

In the bottom of the 10th, Hanson led off with a walk against reliever Jose Valdez (1-2). Hanson stole second and moved to third on a balk. He scored on a Drew Maggi single, giving Altoona the 4-3 win.

Palacios took the no-decision despite a strong start. He allowed two runs on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts in 6.1 innings.
