New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
MANCHESTER, N.H. - After nearly throwing a perfect game against New Britain on June 27, Casey Lawrence was once again baffling to Rock Cats hitters on Wednesday afternoon. The righty worked 7.2 innings and was backed by the first Double-A home run of Dalton Pompey in a 7-1 victory.
Lawrence entered the game with a 15 innings scoreless streak, the longest of any Fisher Cat this season. The streak wouldn't last long, however, as a two-out triple compounded by an error allowed New Britain (44-45) to score the game's first run for a 1-0 first-inning lead.
That is all Lawrence would allow, which enabled the Fisher Cats (43-47) to put together some quality at-bats against Double-A rookie Jose Berrios. Making his Double-A debut, Berrios held on to the 1-0 lead through two perfect innings. Things changed, however, in the third.
Michael Crouse and Jack Murphy drew a pair of walks to begin the inning. After a sac bunt by Jorge Flores, Pompey single to right-center for a 2-1 lead.
An inning later they were back at it, once again using a walk to spark a rally. With two outs, K.C. Hobson drew the third walk issued by Berrios. Crouse followed by blasting a home run into the left field Dinner in the Den for a 4-1 cushion.
Lawrence continued to roll along, hardly seeming to break a sweat. He put a pair of men on in the third, but retired the final hitter on a weak groundout. After a lead-off single in the fourth, he induced a double play to end that threat.
In the fifth, after the Rock Cats ran into an out on the bases, Pompey added to the lead. The outfielder blasted a 3-2 pitch over the center field wall for his first home run in New Hampshire. His seventh between two levels of play made it a 5-1 game.
New Hampshire added on two more in the sixth, using a two-out walk once again. Mike McDade began the inning with a double, and was standing at third base when Crouse drew a walk with two outs. Consecutive singles by Jack Murphy and Jorge Flores each scored a run to pad the lead at 7-1.
Lawrence left the game with two outs in the eighth after allowing a pair of singles. Randy Boone struck out the final hitter in that frame before working a perfect ninth to seal the win.
Lawrence (W; 6-4) scattered eight hits, striking out five with two walks. He has not allowed an earned run in his last five outings, dating back to May 23. He has allowed just one run - unearned - since coming off the disabled list. The righty leads the team with six wins with four of those coming in his last five outings.
Berrios (L; 0-1) took the loss allowing five runs on just three hits and three walks.
Pompey had his second straight multi-hit game finishing with three RBI. Crouse was on base four times with a single, a home run, and two walks.
The teams meet for the final time in Manchester in the rubber game on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. The game will be followed by Atlas Fireworks presented by Irving Oil. Tickets are available at www.nhfishercats.com, by calling (603) 641-2005, or by visiting the box office at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.
Lefty Matt Boyd (0-2, 6.83) will start the final home game before the All-Star Break against New Britain's Virgil Vasquez (4-5, 4.03). Radio coverage begins with Bob Lipman at 6:45 p.m. on WGIR 610 AM and www.nhfishercats.com.
