
'Wolves Drop Opener to Squirrels in 12 innings

The SeaWolves dropped their 10th straight and forth straight of on a walkoff, as they fell in 12 innings to the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 2-1, on Thursday at The Diamond.
Richmond struck first against Erie starter Charlie Furbush in the bottom of the third. With one out, Brandon Crawford sent a deep drive to right-center. The ball was just out of the reach of right fielder Kody Kaiser and it dropped in and rattled around the outfield wall allowing Crawford to pick up an inside the park home run for a 1-0 Richmond lead.
From that point on, Furbush was lights out as he would go on to retire 12 straight after the home run. In the no-decision, Furbush went seven-plus innings, allowing a run on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
Erie tied the game against Richmond starter Clayton Tanner in the top of the seventh. Andy Dirks walked to start the inning. With two outs, Kaiser extended his hitting streak to seven straight games, lacing a single to the gap in right-center on a hit-and run, bringing Dirks home from first, tying the game at 1-1.
Relievers Zach Simons and Lester Oliveros held Richmond scoreless for four innings taking the ballgame to the 12th. Simons struck out the side in both the eighth and ninth innings. The six strikeouts were a season-high for Simons.
Richmond pitchers were equally as impressive, holding the âWolves scoreless over the final five innings of the game, allowing just one hit.
The âWolves pitching staff held until the bottom of the 12th. With one out, Darrin Ford reached on an infield single off of Cory Hamilton. The next hitter, Crawford, doubled to the left-field gap, scoring Ford from first, giving the Squirrels a 2-1 win.
Erie has lost five straight to Richmond and is now 18-games under .500.
The 'Wolves are also 0-6 in extra-innings games.
Erie looks to snap its longest losing streak of the season on Friday night at The Diamond...7:05 First Pitch. Righty Thad Weber (4-8, 4.11 ERA) takes the mound for the âWolves against RHP Mike MacDonald (2-6, 4.64 ERA) for the Squirrels.
