Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
RICHMOND, VA - The Squirrels walked off winners on Brandon Crawford's RBI double in the bottom of the 12th inning, defeating the Erie SeaWolves, 2-1, in front of 7,594 at The Diamond on Thursday night. The loss sent the SeaWolves to their 10th consecutive defeat.
The ballgame had been tied since the seventh as Darren Ford reached on an error on second baseman Alden Carrithers with one out in the 12th inning. With Ford running, Crawford laced a double to left-center field and Ford dashed in for the Richmond victory. Right-hander Cory Hamilton (0-1) was tagged with the loss, conceding the decisive run.
Left-hander Jake Stevens (4-1) became a deserving winner for the Squirrels. After entering in the eighth inning, Stevens worked 4 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. He didn't allow a hit as he retired 14 of the 15 batters that he faced for his fourth victory of the season.
Pitching dominated the ballgame in the early going, but Crawford got the Squirrels on the board and electrified The Diamond in the third inning. Crawford stung a ball off the wall in right-center field against Erie lefty Charlie Furbush. The ball caromed back past both outfielders and Crawford circled the bases for his second inside-the-park home run of the season. His seventh overall home run of the season gave Richmond the 1-0 lead.
Squirrels' lefty Clayton Tanner had shut out the SeaWolves on one hit through six innings, but a lead-off walk issued in the seventh helped Erie tie the game, 1-1. Andy Dirks received the free-pass and was moving as Kody Kaiser laced a single to right-center field. Dirks came all the way around to score and pull Erie even.
Ultimately, Tanner worked seven-plus innings to a no-decision. He allowed just the lone earned run on three hits. Furbush also left after seven-plus innings and didn't factor in the decision. He surrendered a single run on five hits.
Right-handers Zach Simons and Lester Oliveros each worked two scoreless innings of relief for Erie. Squirrels' righty Ronnie Ray also pitched in relief in the eighth inning.
Game two of the series is scheduled for 7:05 PM on Friday night at The Diamond. RHP Craig Westcott (0-0, ---) will make the start for the Squirrels against RHP Thad Weber (4-8, 4.11) for Erie.
