TONIGHT: The Richmond Flying Squirrels and Erie SeaWolves will meet in the opener of a four-game series...The Flying Squirrels rallied after falling behind 8-1, scoring five unanswered runs; however, the Akron Aeros were able to hold on to an 8-6 win in the finale of a three-game series on Wednesday night at The Diamond.
TONIGHT'S STARTERS: Left-hander Clayton Tanner gets the start in the opener of the series for the Flying Squirrels...Received a no-decision in his last start at Erie 6/26...Allowed three runs on five hits in 7 1/3 innings...Struck out one batter and walked two...Gave up two runs and three hits in the first inning...Retired 19 of 21 batters (1st-7th)...Was ejected by first base umpire Adam Hamari for arguing a balk call in the bottom of the eighth...First Flying Squirrels' player to be ejected from a game...Recorded 13 ground outs and seven fly outs...Threw 95 pitches, 63 strikes...Finished the month of June 2-1 with a 2.97 ERA in five starts...Start was his second-longest of the season...Went six innings or more for the fifth consecutive start...Had previously gone six innings or more just once in his first nine outings...Walked more batters than he struck out for the eighth time in 14 starts...Has allowed 17 runs, 13 earned, on 33 hits over 38 2/3 innings in his last six starts since coming off of the DL 5/30 (3.03 ERA)...Had allowed 10 runs, nine earned, on 13 hits in 5 2/3 in his previous two outings before landing on the DL (14.30 ERA)...Left-handed batters are hitting .228 against him (13-for-57).
Left-hander Charlie Furbush gets the nod in game one of the series for the SeaWolves...Received a no-decision in his Double-A debut against Richmond...Allowed three runs on eight hits in seven innings of work...Struck out four batters and walked two...Gave up two home runs to Thomas Neal...Leads all of minor league baseball in strikeouts with 113...Was 4-5 with a 3.39 ERA in 13 starts with Advanced-A Lakeland prior to his promotion...Struck out 109 batters and walked 14 in 77 innings of work...Struck out 10-plus batters in four outings including a season-high 13 strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings 5/10 against Port Charlotte...Lost each of his final two starts with the Flying Tigers giving up 11 runs, nine earned, on 18 hits in 8 1/3 innings (9.72 ERA)...Had recorded eight straight quality starts 4/29-6/5...Was selected as a Florida State League Mid-Season All-Star but did not participate...Spent all of 2009 with Advanced-A Lakeland and went 6-7 with a 3.96 ERA in 24 games, 23 starts...Struck out 93 batters and walked 32 in 111 1/3 innings...Missed all of 2008 with a left elbow sprain...Made pro debut in 2007 and went 6-1 with a 2.34 ERA in 12 appearances combined with Rookie GCL Tigers and Low-A West Michigan...Selected in the fourth round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft...Attended LSU.
THOMAS THE TRAIN: Outfielder Thomas Neal finished the month of June going 3-for-5 with two doubles and a run scored in last night's loss to Akron...It was his team-leading 24th multi-hit game of the season and his sixth game with three hits or more...Neal is tied for third in the Eastern League with 86 hits...In 27 games in June, the 22-year-old hit .347 (34-for-98) with five home runs and 19 RBI...He raised his average from .259 to .288 over the course of the month...Neal has hits in six of his last seven games including four multi-hit games and is batting .412 (14-for-34) over that stretch with three doubles, four home runs, 12 RBI and six runs scored.
MAKING IT RAIN: Third baseman Conor Gillaspie extended his hit streak to six games with a 1-for-5 performance last night including a run scored...The streak is his longest of the season...The 22-year-old is hitting .385 (10-for-26) over his last six games including four multi-hit games...He has a double, four RBI, and two runs scored over that stretch.
THUNDERSTRUCK Outfielder Roger Kieschnick has hits in each of his last five games after going 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored last night...The 23-year-old is 8-for-22 (.364) with two doubles, a home run, four RBI, and two runs scored over that stretch and has multi-hit games in three of the five contests...His longest hit streak of the season is six games (4/27-5/2).
JUNE SWOON: The Flying Squirrels finished the month of June 10-18, the first losing month for the club this season...Richmond's offense had it's best month hitting .253 with 20 home runs; however, the pitching staff had its worst month finishing with a 4.23 ERA.
BURNING RUBBER: The Flying Squirrels are 1-5 in rubber matches this season...The club's lone win in a series-deciding contest came 5/12 at Bowie.
M-"O"-MENTUM: The Flying Squirrels have hit .306 (70-for-229) over their last six games with 21 extra-base hits including 14 doubles and seven home runs...Richmond has collected 10-plus hits in five of the last six games...The club has also scored 33 runs (5.5R/G) over that span...Prior to their recent run, the Flying Squirrels were hitting .244 as a team and were averaging 3.4 runs per game over their first 73 games.
HITTER BY DESIGNATION: The Flying Squirrels are hitting .260 (327-for-1256) with the designated hitter in the line up...The club is batting .239 (328-for-1374) with the pitcher batting...Richmond DHs are batting .201 (28-for-139) on the season; however, the DHs are just 8-for-82 over the last 21 games against American League affiliates (since 5/18)...The Flying Squirrel DHs were hitting .357 (20-for-56) over their first 16 games...Richmond pitchers are hitting just .130 (12-for-92) at the plate with 52 strikeouts...The Flying Squirrels are 22-16 against American League affiliates and will face an AL affiliate over the next four games counting today.
DOUBLETREE DOWNTOWN DOUBLE PLAYS: The Richmond Flying Squirrels have turned 107 double plays in 79 games including six on 5/7 in Harrisburg...The club leads the Eastern League in double plays turned and has not gone more than two games without turning a double play.
CFS STAT OF THE NIGHT: Right-hander David Mixon lasted just 4 1/3 innings in last night's 8-6 loss to Akron...Richmond starters had gone six innings or more in each of the previous 12 games...The eight runs allowed by Flying Squirrels' pitching last night was the most since 6/16 when the club gave up 11 runs in an 11-2 loss against Binghamton.
