ROSEMONT, Ill.---The Chicago Wolves saved their scoring for the third period for the second straight game, fighting back from a 3-0 deficit to pull within one in the final minutes of the contest, but the equalizer evaded them and the Peoria Rivermen picked up a 3-2 win at the Allstate Arena Saturday night. After being blanked on 13 shots in the first 40 minutes, right wing Jeff Hamilton finally found the back of the net for Chicago, 7:46 into the third period. The forward took a pass from linemate Joe Motzko and flung the puck at Peoria netminder Ben Bishop, who got his glove on it, but deflected it up over his head where it fell to the ice and trickled over the goal line. Just over two minutes later, Steve Martins took a centering pass from right wing Spencer Machacek and cranked a blast straight at Bishop to pull Chicago within one, 3-2, with 9:50 remaining in the game. Bishop (11-9-1) was able to hold off the late rally to collect the win, ultimately turning in a 23-save performance for the Rivermen. The loss marked the sixth consecutive defeat for Chicago (19-18-2-1) a season-high and the longest winless stretch in two seasons. Peoria (21-17-1-1) wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, jumping out to a 1-0 lead four minutes into the contest. Right wing Eric Neilson worked the puck out from the boards behind the Wolves net to Ryan Reaves and skated to the goal mouth, where he took a pass from Reaves and deflected it home. The Rivermen needed half that time to crack the scoreboard in the second frame, taking a 2-0 lead 1:57 into the period when left wing Jeff Cowan parked himself at the top of the crease and deflected a long blast from defenseman Jim Jackson past Chicago goaltender Robert Gherson. A power play opened the ice for Peoria to grab a 3-0 lead heading into the third period. With two Wolves and one Rivermen skater in the penalty box, Trent Whitfield lasered a blast from the left face-off circle over Gherson's glove with one second remaining in the second period, which held up to be the game-winner. Robert Gherson (5-5-0) posted 14 saves in his second straight start for Chicago. The Wolves play their third game in three days when they host the Houston Aeros at the Allstate Arena on Sunday at 6 p.m.
