Wolves Best Rampage, 5-3

ROSEMONT, Ill.---The Chicago Wolves hammered out four goals in a span of 4:08 in the second period and held on to earn a 5-3 victory before 10,519 fans at the Allstate Arena Saturday night.

Forwards Andre Deveaux, Spencer Machacek, Ryan Garbutt, Darren Haydar and Sergio Somma scored for Chicago (39-30-4-6) in the team's largest offensive output in five games.

The win helped sixth-place Chicago inch ahead in the West Division standings, but a 2-0 win by the fifth-place Oklahoma City Barons in Texas eliminated the Wolves from playoff contention.

"We had to win tonight," said Wolves Head Coach Don Lever. "It showed a bit at first, we looked a little uptight, but once they got the first one we stormed back and didn't let them back in."

After a scoreless 31:03, the two teams erupted for five goals in a span of 5:57, including four straight for Chicago in a span of 4:08.

Oliver Ekman-Larsson put San Antonio (39-33-4-3) ahead, 1-0, 11:03 into the second period. Center Bracken Kearns controlled the puck in the corner threw it out to right wing Matt Watkins, who slipped a centering pass across to Ekman-Larsson as he came streaking in and flipped into the empty right side of the net past Wolves goaltender Edward Pasquale.

The Wolves responded 49 seconds later to tie it up, 1-1, when Somma came flying in and pushed a loose puck past Rampage netminder Joe Fallon for his first professional goal.

Chicago took the lead, 2-1, with a marker from Deveaux at 13:45 of the second period. The center took a pass from left wing Fredrik Pettersson just below the right circle and ripped a shot into the corner of the net.

Thirty-four seconds later, the Wolves scored again on a tally from Garbutt. Machacek carried the puck down the boards and centered a pass for Garbutt who reached to knock it past Fallon to make the score 3-1.

Machacek made the Wolves lead 4-1 at 16:00 of the second period. Fallon came out of the crease to play the puck behind the net, but Machacek beat him to it and wrapped around to deposit the puck in the empty net.

Chicago bagged a fifth goal, 3:29 into the third period when Haydar deflected Mark Matheson's long shot from the blue line past Fallon.

Fallon (2-7-0) turned aside 20 shots for the Rampage.

San Antonio snapped the Wolves streak of five unanswered tallies when Watkins cranked a shot past Pasquale, top shelf, at 10:24 of the third period.

The Rampage added a third goal, when center Randy Robitaille found defenseman Brandon Gormley alone in the slot and the blueliner wound up and hammered a shot past Pasquale to make the score 5-3 with 8:10 left in the third frame.

Pasquale (11-10-1) made 20 saves for Chicago.

The Wolves wrap up their 17th regular season when they host the Rockford IceHogs at the Allstate Arena on Sunday at 3 p.m.
