Rochester Americans News Release
(Rochester, NY)...The Rochester Americans suffered their fourth consecutive loss this afternoon at the hands of the Toronto Marlies by 6-5 count in front of 7,000 fans at Ricoh Coliseum in downtown Toronto. With the win, the Marlies improved to 36-32-1-10 while the Amerks fall to 31-39-5-4 and have now lost 11 of their last 12.
Toronto was powered by Justin Hodgman (1+1), Alex Foster (1+1) and Marcel Mueller (1+1), each of whom contributed two points. Mike Brennan (1+0), Ryan Hamilton (1+0), and Aaron Voros (1+0) also scored in the winning effort. Netminder Ben Scrivens turned away 31 of 36 Rochester shots to pick up the victory.
Chris Taylor (0+3) and Anthony Luciani (2+1) led the Amerks with three points apiece in the contest. Luciani, who was just signed to an Amateur Tryout (ATO) this week and made his Amerks debut last night, notched the first three points of his professional career. T.J. Fast (1+1) scored his first goal of the season in the loss, while Michael Duco (1+0) and Colby Robak (1+0) also found the back of the net. Duco's goal was his 20th of the season and extended Rochester's 55-year long streak of boasting at least one 20-goal scorer since the team's inception in 1956. Marc Cheverie finished with 18 saves between the pipes.
Voros got the Marlies on the board first just 3:25 into the opening frame, potting his third of the season. Jeff Cowan and Andrew Crescenzi earned assists on the play.
Toronto doubled its lead midway through the period at 8:53 as Mueller cashed in his 11th. Mueller finished off a combination with Hodgman and Korbinian Holzer.
The Amerks battled back to tie the game with two tallies in the final six minutes of the first, with two skaters netting their first goals of the year. With Toronto's Simon Gysbers in the sin-bin for delay of game, Fast scored with help from AJ Jenks and Taylor.
Luciani tied the game with just three seconds remaining in the opening frame. It was the newcomer's first career professional goal, with the Taylor picking up another helper.
The Marlies restored their two-goal lead early in the second period, finding the twine twice in the span of less than a minute. Captain Foster converted his 11th of the year with the man-advantage at the 4:52 mark. The puck caromed in off the skate of a Rochester defender in front before alluding Cheverie.
Hamilton then followed up with his 16th, making his way to the slot from behind the net and placing a backhander just inside the post. Former RIT Tiger Tyler Brenner factored in on the play with an assist, his fifth point in seven games since joining the squad.
The Amerks gained the momentum just over a minute later with a pair of goals just 11 seconds apart to tie the game at four. Robak sparked the charge when he jumped on a loose rebound in front of the net and converted his seventh at 7:20. Duco then found the back of the net for the team-leading 20th time this season, deflecting a point shot off the stick of Fast through Scrivens.
With things looking like the teams would head into the second intermission knotted at four, Toronto took a 5-4 lead heading into the dressing room thanks to a goal with just 10 seconds remaining in the middle frame. After receiving a pass from Greg Scott, Brennan beat Cheverie with a long shot from the right point through traffic.
After over seven minutes of scoreless play in the final period, Hodgman sent a backhander under the crossbar to give the Marlies what proved to be the game-winner.
Luciani would pull the Amerks to within one with just 14 seconds remaining, slamming home a backdoor feed from linemate Taylor.
Rochester returns to the ice Sunday, April 10th as they close out the regular season with the North Division's third-place Lake Erie Monsters. Puck drop is slotted for 5:05 p.m. at The Blue Cross Arena and will be carried live SportsRadio 1280 WHTK and FM 107.3, Rochester's Sports Talk.
