Erie SeaWolves News Release
The SeaWolves won their third consecutive game with a 5-2 win over the Akron Aeros on Tuesday night at Jerry Uht Park moving the Howlers to a season-high 12-games over .500.
The Aeros would take a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning against Erie starter Jon Kibler. Kyle Haines led off with a walk and on a sacrifice bunt by Jose Constanza, an error by Kibler allowed both runners to reach base safely. Cristo Arnal followed and laid down a second straight sacrifice bunt. Once again, an error by Kibler allowed Akron to load the bases. Matt McBride and Carlos Santana followed with back-to-back run scoring groundouts, giving Akron the early edge.
The SeaWolves would get a run back in the bottom of the third against Akron starter Bobby Livingston. With two outs, Andy Dirks was hit by a pitch bringing Danny Worth to the plate. Worth doubled down the left field line, scoring Dirks from first, making it a 2-1 game. The hit by Worth was Erie's first of the game.
Erie would take the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Santo De Leon led off with a single and Deik Scram walked to put two aboard for Ron Bourquin. Livingston struck out Bourquin for the first out but the 'Wolves advanced both baserunners into scoring position on a successful double steal. Dirks followed with a two-run single up the middle, giving Erie a 3-2 lead. Dirks picked up his 29th and 30th RBI on the play and 26 of his 30 have come with runners in scoring position.
Erie would hold the one run lead into the bottom of the eighth inning against Akron reliever Steven Wright. Brennan Boesch and Casper Wells led off the inning with back-to-back singles. For Wells, he extended his hitting streak to a season-high 10-straight games while Boesch is now one-shy of tying a season-high with a nine-game hitting streak. Alex Avila then grounded to the right side moving the runners into scoring position for De Leon. With the infield drawn in, De Leon grounded to the second baseman Arnal. Arnal fired to the plate, but Boesch would knock the ball away from Santana to score. The ball would go to the backstop and Wells would follow home, giving the 'Wolves a 5-2 lead.
The lead was plenty for Brett Jensen as he shut the door in the top of the ninth, including striking out Arnal looking to end the game, picking up his 11th save of the season.
Kibler (6-5) picked up the win, his first since July 6. He went 7.1 innings, allowing two unearned runs on four hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Kibler improved to 2-0 in three starts against the Aeros and his record is above .500 for the first time this season.
The 'Wolves have now won nine straight games against Akron and are 9-0 against the Aeros at Jerry Uht Park. The home win was Erie's sixth straight, one shy of tying a season-high. The club has also won nine of its last 10 home games.
