Dakota Wizards News Release
BISMARCK, ND, March 6, 2009 - The NBA Development League Central Division Champion Dakota Wizards have teamed up with Basin Electric for the second annual "Brave The Shave" event in cooperation with the St. Baldrick's foundation to help raise funds and awareness about cancer.
Wizards forward Renaldo Major and center Richard Hendrix will take part in this battle against cancer, along with former Wizards center Rod Benson who was traded to Reno earlier this week. Benson will participate via his website www.toomuchrodbenson.com. With enough donations these players will shave their heads on March 17th. For more information on the St. Baldrick's foundation or to donate money towards these three athletes shaving their heads visit www.dakotawizards.com.
"We're proud to be a part of this event," says General Manager Tom Wagganer. "Rod, Renaldo and Richard have all been touched by cancer in one form another. If they can reach out to their fans and other networks to bring awareness to the need for more research - and raise lots of money at the same time, they're going to do it."
St. Baldrick's is the world's largest volunteer-driven fundraising event for childhood cancer research. Thousands of volunteers shave their heads in solidarity of children with cancer, while requesting donations of support from friends and family.
Since the first event in 2000, St. Baldrick's volunteers have raised more than $50 million for life-saving research and events have been hosted in 48 states, in addition to Australia, Bermuda, Brazil, Canada, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Iraq, Mexico, Northern Ireland, and the United Kingdom. Last year Basin Electric alone raised more than $94,000.
