Los Angeles D-Fenders News Release
EL SEGUNDO, CA - The Los Angeles D-Fenders defeated the visiting Anaheim Arsenal in overtime Friday, 108-103, at STAPLES Center.
Arsenal guard Ray Reed hit a jumper with 0.5 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game at 95 apiece, sending it to overtime. Brandon Heath took over in the extra period scoring seven points as he led the D-Fenders to the victory.
Los Angeles won for the sixth time in their past nine games, improving their record to 13-24 on the season. Anaheim (14-23) dropped their 12th road game of the season.
Gabriel Hughes did most of his damage for Los Angeles after halftime as he scored all 19 points and seven of his team-high nine rebounds after the break. Joe Crawford also chipped in with 19 points to pace the D-Fenders before fouling out. Heath finished the night with 16 points.
"Coach (Panaggio) told me he needed more energy;" Hughes noted. "They wanted me to come out (in the second half) and be more aggressive in the post. Establish myself more, talking, helping the team out. My main focus was rebounding the ball, the points will come."
Without top scorer James White who was called up to the Houston Rockets earlier in the week, Anaheim relied on Cedric Bozeman and Kedrick Brown. Bozeman led all scorers with 24, while Brown poured in 22 and 14 rebounds. Arsenal center Marcus Campbell finished with a double-double of his own, pulling down 18 rebounds to go with 17 points. Reed came off the bench to lead all reserves with 16 points.
On assignment from the Los Angeles Lakers, rookie guard Sun Yue hit his first jumper 14 seconds into the game, sending the STAPLES Center crowd to their feet. Yue finished the game with 11 points, seven assists, three rebounds and two blocks.
The D-Fenders will look to sweep the Arsenal in the tail end of a home-and-home tomorrow night at the Anaheim Convention Center.
