November 10, 2010 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release
The Portland Winterhawks (16-2-0-1) won their 10th straight game Wednesday in dramatic fashion with an overtime victory over the Regina Pats (6-10-2-1).
The Hawks maintained their grip on the league's best overall record, and now have 33 points on the season. The 10 straight wins in the longest streak since a 15-game streak in the 1997-98 season.
Ryan Johansen was credited with the winning goal just over a minute into overtime, but the team anticipates a scoring change that will give the goal to Brad Ross.
Portland opened the scoring 5:56 into the first period when Johansen beat Regina netminder Damien Ketlo on a breakaway for his eighth goal of the season. The Winterhawks extended the lead later in the period when Seth Swenson found Riley Boychuk in front of the net, who beat Ketlo for his fourth of the season to make it 2-0 at the 11:14 mark, a score that would last through the end of the first period.
The Pats scored two goals in the first 5:11 of the second period to tie the game at 2-2, the first by Thomas Frazee and the second goal coming from Mikael Jung. The Winterhawks regained the lead later in the period at the 14:23 mark on Sven Bartschi's 14th goal of the season. Bartschi's goal extended his points streak to 13 games. The Pats tied the score at 3-3 with just 20 seconds left in the period on a goal by Colin Reddin.
Regina took a 4-3 lead over the Hawks at the 8:48 mark of the third period on a power play goal by Carter Ashton. The Winterhawks kept up the pressure as they went for the tying goal, firing 17 shots at the Pats in the third period. They finally broke through with three minutes left when Boychuk scored his second goal of the game to tie the game at 4-4, setting up overtime.
Just over a minute into the extra frame, the Winterhawks got the winner to come away with their 10th straight victory.
Mac Carruth got the win in net to improve his record to 9-1 as he made 33 saves on 37 shots. Ketlo finished with 36 saves on 41 Portland shots. Portland was 0-3 on the power play, and 3-4 on the penalty kill.
The Winterhawks continue their road trip Friday night in Saskatoon against the East Division-leading Blades in a matchup between two first place teams.
