The Portland Winterhawks (6-6-0-0) won their fourth straight game as they picked up a 5-2 win over the the Tri-City Americans (4-8-1-0) Wednesday at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
The Americans opened the scoring 14:21 into the first when Jordan Topping scored on a power play for a 1-0 lead, but just 37 seconds later Rodrigo Abols tipped in a point shot from Jack Dougherty and tied the game at 1-1.
It remained tied until 5:57 of the second when Colton Veloso collected a round in front of the net and banged it in for a 2-1 lead. They struck again quickly, as just 41 seconds later Dominic Turgeon fired a shot from the right faceoff circle past Tri-Cities netminder Evan Sarthou to make it 3-1. It was the sixth straight game with a goal for Turgeon, extending his career-high.
Tri-Cities got one back with 1:38 to go in the frame on a goal from Beau McCue to cut the Hawks' lead to 3-2 going into the second.
It was still a one-goal game until 14:55 of the third, when Winterhawks defenseman Keoni Texeira blasted a shot from the point that got through traffic and beat Sarthou for his first goal of the season and a 4-2 lead. Turgeon added a late shorthanded goal into an empty net for the 5-2 final.
Adin Hill was once again outstanding in net for the Hawks, as he stopped 50 of the 52 shots he faced, including all 23 he saw in the third period.
The Hawks will be back on the ice Friday when they travel to Everett to take on the Silvertips at 7:35 p.m.
