Everett Silvertips News Release
EVERETT, Wash. - Carter Hart's 38 saves helped the Everett Silvertips force overtime against the defending Eastern Conference champions, settling for a 3-2 shootout loss to the Brandon Wheat Kings before a crowd of 3,408 at XFINITY Arena on Wednesday.
The Silvertips, buoyed by a two-goal outburst to begin the game, were aided by former Wheat King Dario Winkler's first career WHL goal in his Silvertips debut. Hart's counterpart, Logan Thompson, made 20 saves while Braylon Shmyr's third period goal helped force overtime.
The Silvertips suffered their first shootout loss and moved their record to 5-3-0-1 on the year, now 8-4-0-1 lifetime against the Wheat Kings.
Brandon controlled play in the offensive zone for the first several minutes, but the Silvertips struck first on Carson Stadnyk's third goal on the power play, with 4:39 left in the first period. Matt Fonteyne whipped a cross-ice feed to the tape of Patrick Bajkov, stationed at the left circle. His backdoor relay skipped off Stadnyk to the net, and Stadnyk converted by jamming at the loose puck for a 1-0 lead.
Winkler then converted for a 2-0 lead. With the Silvertips gaining zone entry with speed, Fonteyne's deflection hit Cole MacDonald between the circles. MacDonald found Winkler, tape-to-tape at the bottom of the left circle, who beat Thompson, glove side at 3:39 of the second period.
Brandon got back into the game on Rihards Bukarts' fifth goal of the season at 8:50, racing through the neutral zone and uncorking a 40-foot slapper for a one-goal game. Stadnyk followed with two tremendous looks at the net in an attempt to restore the two-goal cushion, with the puck falling off his stick on both occasions.
Shmyr and the Wheat Kings capitalized for a 2-2 tie at 6:28 of the third period. Seconds after Ivan Provorov hit the post, Macoy Erkamps found Shmyr alone at the left post for a tap-in and his third goal of the season.
The Silvertips were outshot, 3-1 in the 3-on-3 overtime period and after a scoreless set of two rounds in the shootout, Reid Duke converted on a forehand deke at the top of the third round. Logan Thompson and the Wheat Kings escaped the shootout officially after Matt Fonteyne fell short with a move down the left side.
