Winterhawks Weekly: Hawks Score Ten Goals in Weekend Sweep
January 27, 2025 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release
The Portland Winterhawks completed a two-game sweep against U.S. Division opponents this past weekend. The Hawks went a combined 6-for-12 on the power play and netted ten total goals in the two wins. Portland currently sits in fourth place in the Western Conference with a 27-16-2-1 record.
Hot Hawks:
Ondřej Štěbeták and Marek Schlenker each earned a win over the weekend. Štěbeták turned aside 37 of the 41 shots he faced in Friday's home win and Schlenker denied 39 of the 41 shots that came his way in Wenatchee, including all 22 shots in the third period.
Captain Kyle Chyzowski had another stellar week, tallying six points (1G, 5A), extending his point streak to eight games, and recording his 200th point as a Winterhawk. He is just the 38th Winterhawk all-time to surpass 200 career points.
Defenseman Tyson Jugnauth was a standout with a four-point week (G, 3A), maintaining his spot at the top of the CHL's defensive scoring leaderboard.
Forward Josh Zakreski continued his strong play with four points, including two-goals in Friday's home victory against Tri-City.
Forward Ryan Miller netted three points in the two games, including his seventh multipoint game of the season on Saturday.
Newcomer defenseman Max Pšenička made his Western Hockey League debut on Friday night, putting up an assist in both games this weekend. Pšenička was ranked No.8 by NHL Central Scouting among International skaters.
Play of the Week:
If the Portland Trail Blazers need some help, we know a few guys they should call. This week's Play of the Week goes to Josh Zakreski, who played a little basketball on the VMC ice to net his first of two goals in the game. Max Pšenička fed the puck ahead and Joel Plante "dribbled" it to Big Z who scooped in the go-ahead goal with some incredible hand-eye coordination.
Weekly Rewind:
Portland 6, Tri-City 4 (Friday):
The Winterhawks returned home from the East Division road trip in a big way, registering a season-high 50 shots on goal and toppling the Tri-City Americans 6-4 at the VMC. The Hawks controlled the game wire to wire backed behind Kyle Chyzowski (3A) and Tyson Jugnauth's three-point performances. Ondřej Štěbeták backstopped the Hawks to a 37-save win and fellow Czech Republic native Max Pšenička recorded an assist in his WHL debut. Portland also celebrated its fifth annual Pride Night game in front of 6,296 fans.
Portland 5, Wenatchee 3 (Saturday):
The Portland Winterhawks exploded for a season-high four power-play goals against Wenatchee to beat the Wild 5-2 on the road Saturday night. With the win, the Winterhawks improved to 27-16-2-1 on the season and 3-1-0-0 against Wenatchee. Diego Buttazzoni scored twice in the victory, his fifth multi-goal performance of the year. Ryan Miller tallied a goal and an assist in the victory and Kyle Chyzowski led all players with three points (G, 2A). Marek Schlenker excelled between the pipes, stopping 39 of the 41 shots he faced to earn his 11th win of the year.
The Week Ahead:
The Winterhawks return home to host a pair of weekend games against the Medicine Hat Tigers on Friday, January 31 at 7:00 P.M. PT and a clash with the Victoria Royals on Saturday, February 1 at 6:00 P.M. PST. The Winterhawks will debut their specialty Hawks Fight Cancer jerseys this Saturday at the VMC.
