Spokane Chiefs News Release

Spokane, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs battled throughout but couldn't hold the Portland Winterhawks back in the third period, losing 4-2 on Tuesday night at Spokane Arena. Rookie forward Jake Gudelj scored his first career WHL goal in the contest.

The Winterhawks struck first with 3:44 left in the first period when Kyle Chyzowski chipped the puck past goalie Cooper Michaluk after a slick backhand setup by Jonah Bevington.

The Chiefs tied it up at 1-1 when defenseman Raegan Wiles carried the puck from the red line to the right point before rifling a perfect shot inside the left corner for his sixth of the season.

Portland struck again with 10:25 left in the second when Marcus Nguyen snapped home a shorthanded goal on an odd-man rush just before the end of a Spokane power play.

The visitors extended their lead early in the third when Tyson Kozak picked a corner from the blue line for his 24th goal of the year. They made it 4-1 under three minutes later at 10:39 when Clay Hanus scored unassisted.

A bright spot came for Spokane late in regulation when North Vancouver native Jake Gudelj found the net for his first career WHL goal, with assists to Grady Lane and Graham Sward. Gudelj, who is the youngest full-time player in the league this season with a Dec. 5, 2005 birthday, was a fourth-round pick by Spokane in the 2020 WHL Prospects Draft.

The Chiefs finished the game 0-for-4 on the power play and 1-for-1 on the penalty kill. Portland outshot Spokane 39-28.

Spokane will hit the road on Friday to take on the Seattle Thunderbirds in Kent for the first of three-straight road games this weekend.
