Swift Current Broncos News Release

Swift Current, Sask. - The Swift Current Broncos (17-24-5-1) fought their way back from a 2-0 deficit against the Brandon Wheat Kings (22-15-3-2) on Tuesday night, but the comeback fell just short as Wheat Kings captain Ridley Greig scored the overtime winner, giving Brandon a 3-2 win.

The Broncos got a handful of power play chances early in the game after a delay of game penalty and a four-minute checking to the head penalty against the Wheat Kings. The latter of which knocked Broncos defenceman Sam McGinley out of action for the remainder of the game.

Swift Current couldn't take advantage of the early chances as the game remained scoreless through the opening 10 minutes.

Ridley Greig ran over Carter Stebbings deep in the Broncos zone later in the period, resulting in nearly every player on the ice pairing up. Eric Van Impe went after Greig following the hit as they were both given two minute penalties along with five-minute fighting penalties.

The Broncos killed off their first penalty of the night shortly after and the two teams went into the intermission scoreless with the shots 8-4 Swift Current.

It took until the 11:19 mark of the second period for the game to find its opening goal. The Wheat Kings won a faceoff in their own zone and carried the puck up the ice. A tic-tac-toe passing play ended with Rylen Roarsma tapping the puck into an open net to give Brandon a 1-0 lead.

Just 56 seconds later, Quinn Mantei's long wrist shot from the left point found its way into the back of the net to extend the Wheat Kings lead to 2-0.

The Broncos responded quickly when Cole Nagy gained the Brandon line and dropped the puck off for Carter Stebbings. Stebbings skated into the left circle before firing a shot under the glove of Ethan Kruger, scoring his fifth of the season to cut the Brandon lead to 2-1.

The Broncos went to the power play short after the goal and after Brandon hit the goalpost on a shorthanded chance, the Broncos tied the game.

Connor Hvidston's centering pass from behind the Brandon net bounced off a defender and into the crease, before being picked up by another Brandon player. Josh Davies was heading to the front of the net, and was able to muscle the puck off the Brandon players stick and into the net, tying the game at two.

Neither team could find the back of the net in the third period as the two teams went into overtime for the second straight time, and third time in the season series.

Brandon won the opening draw in overtime and would end the game 45 seconds later. Greig took a pass in the right circle and skated toward the net before cutting across the crease, sliding in the game winner to give Brandon the 3-2 lead.

The Broncos now get set to welcome the Medicine Hat Tigers (9-29-3-1) on Friday.

Announced attendance was 1,385.
