Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Swift Current, SK - Ridly Greig earned another Gordie Howe Hat-Trick as the Brandon Wheat Kings picked up a 3-2 overtime win in Swift Current on Tuesday night.
The Ottawa Senators prospect who missed the morning skate and team meetings with a stomach bug scored once, added an assist, racked up nine penalty minutes, and was 10/24 in the faceoff circle leading his team to victory.
"The last time Rids was sick, was the Teddy Toss two years ago... He came out and scored the first two goals of the game and added two assists," said Assistant Coach Mark Derlago with a chuckle. "He just gets the job done, what else can I say. He was excellent tonight."
The Wheat Kings came out of the gate slowly, and found themselves in penalty trouble early, having to kill six minutes before the clock ticked past the five-minute mark.
"It's tough to get everyone into the game when you're on the kill early," added Derlago. "We did a good job getting out of trouble in the first period, found our footing, and kept creating chances as the game went on."
The Wheat Kings killed four of the Broncos' five chances.
Quinn Mantei scored his first career WHL goal, and Rylen Roersma added his 13th of the year, in a win that snapped a two-game winless streak.
Brandon finished the game with a short bench, as both Logen Hammett and Owen Harris left the game with injuries.
"We had a lot of minutes to spread around on the back end," said Derlago. "Our young guys maybe aren't used to playing as much as they did tonight, but they stepped up when we called on them and did a great job. We had a ton of great individual efforts on the back end."
Ethan Kruger picked up win number sixteen on the season, kicking aside eighteen shots while Isaac Poulter stopped 22 at the other end.
The Wheat Kings continue this four-game road trip on Wednesday night in Medicine Hat, before a weekend set in Lethbridge and back to Swift Current.
"We reminded these guys all week that this trip features teams fighting for playoff spots," said Derlago."These are big, physical, heavy teams and wins aren't going to come easy."
You can catch Wednesday's game in Medicine Hat on Bounce 96.1 and the iHeartRadio app starting with the pre-game show at 7:45 MB time.
