LYNCHBURG, VA - Winston-Salem scored early and often in a 10-2 rout of Lynchburg on Wednesday night at Calvin Falwell Field. The Warthogs bats racked up 16 hits and Derek Rodriguez continued his recent dominance on the mound as Winston-Salem cruised to the victory. Rodriguez, who is now tied for second in the Carolina League with 12 wins, tossed seven innings and held the Hillcats to one run on seven hits. He allowed a base runner in every inning he pitched, but used three strikeouts and three double plays to keep Lynchburg off balance all night.

Winston-Salem jumped all over Lynchburg starting pitcher Kyle Bloom for three runs in the first inning. The first six batters reached base safely as Robert Valido, Daron Roberts and Javier Castillo all collected RBI singles to give Winston-Salem a 3-0 lead. With the bases loaded and no outs, Bloom was able to avoid further damage by striking out Rod Allen Jr. and Robbie Hudson and getting Matt Sharp to ground out to end the inning.

The Hillcats plated their first run in the bottom of the first inning on a solo homerun by Brad Corley. The Warthogs added a run in the second inning on a Stefan Gartrell RBI single to make the score 4- 1. Winston-Salem put the game away with three more runs in the fourth inning as Roberts lined a two-run single to center field and Brandon Johnson followed with an RBI single to extend the Warthogs advantage to 7-1.

Winston-Salem would bring one run across in the fifth, eighth and ninth innings to take a 10-1 lead before Lynchburg scored the game's final run in the bottom of the ninth to finalize the scoring. Paulo Orlando went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and Daron Roberts finished with three hit and three RBI to lead the Winston-Salem offense.

John Lujan tossed the final two innings for the Warthogs and allowed a run while striking out three. Bloom (9-11) took the loss for Lynchburg after surrendering seven runs on nine hits in only 3 1/3 innings of work.

Winston-Salem will conclude its season series with Lynchburg on Thursday, August 23 at Calvin Falwell Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM with the Warthogs sending RHP Brian Omogrosso (6-8, 4.05) to the mound. The Hillcats will turn to RHP Todd Redmond (7-9, 4.62) to make the start.
