Myrtle Musings...
Lucky Sevens...Myrtle Beach scoffed at its early two-run deficit last night, storming back for a season-high seven runs in the top of the second en route to a 10-8 win over Wilmington (the Pelicans did blow their 7-2 lead, but we'll focus on the positives). Newcomer Ivan Terrazas began the big rally with a leadoff walk, and would eventually cap the inning with a two-run single. In between those trips to the plate Myrtle Beach got a two-run single from Larry Williams, an RBI double off the bat of Jordan Schafer, a bases loaded walk from Willie Cabrera and an RBI groundout from Quentin Davis. Myrtle Beach had scored six runs in an inning four times previously this year.
Ivan the Great...It was quite a night for Birds 1B Ivan Terrazas, who celebrated his return to the Carolina League by reaching base three times and driving in four runs. The 23-year-old from Mexico City began this season with Monclova in the Mexican League, and was hitting .304 with nine homers and 44 RBI in 73 games. After spending all of 2005 in Rome, Terrazas was loaned to Monclova for the bulk of 2006, although he did make a 10-game cameo for Myrtle Beach around this time last year before finishing the season with Class AA Mississippi. Terrazas had a grand total of two RBI in his 10 games with the Pelicans last season.
He'll Help With Our Meditation Techniques...The Pelicans announced their 93rd roster move of the season today, as IF Brandon Monk was received from Rookie-level Danville. Monk, a seventh-round pick out of high school in 2005, was hitting .063 (1-16) in eight games with the D-Braves and has also played for Rome and in the Gulf Coast League already in 2007. He opened the year with Rome but was suspended 50 games when he tested positive for amphetamines, although his motives were far from dirty. Monk has Attention Deficit Disorder, and the amphetamines were found in trace amounts as part of his prescribed medication. Since neither he nor his agent disclosed that he was on the medication during spring training however, minor league baseball had no choice but to suspend him despite the circumstances.
Did You Know...Closer Sung Ki Jung took over second place in single-season franchise history with his 22nd save last night and has allowed one unearned run since June 21st, a span of 21 outings. Kevin Barry holds the record with 26 saves in 2002. Jung is now tied with Kinston's Scott Roehl for the most saves in the Carolina League this year.
