Last Game
Frederick, MD-The Salem Avalanche, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, came back from three down at the outset of the ninth inning to tie the Frederick Keys Tuesday night at Harry Grove Stadium. Then, the rain came and suspended the game in the home half of the inning with one out and the score at 5-5. The remainder will be played starting at 5:30 with the regularly scheduled game starting 30 minutes after. Salem accrued just two runs against Frederick starter Brad Bergesen in eight innings. The Keys called upon reliever Jason Burch for the ninth. He allowed a single to Ryan Reed to open the frame followed by a Cesar Quintero double to left. After Chris Johnson struck out, Jose Lopez's sacrifice fly made the score 5-3. Wladimir Sutil earned a walk on a 3-2 pitch and then stole second to put two on in scoring position for Tim Torres. The switch hitter lobbed a ball into center that scored both runners and tied the game. In the home portion of the ninth, Brent Krause flied out against Rory Shortell in a steady rain and Brian Bock walked as the precipitation increased. As Jake Duncan replaced Bock on the basepath and Zach Dillon was announced as a pinch-hitter for Jedidiah Stephen, the rain became too much and the game was halted. Six on the ten runs in the game were scored in the first two innings. After a Mitch Einertson RBI groundout in the first, Frederick jumped for three in the bottom of the inning against Polin Trinidad and two more in the second.
Suspension bridge: The Avs and Keys will finish last night's game starting at 5:30 this evening. At the conclusion, Salem and Frederick will pause for 30 minutes, then play a nine-inning game. Last night's was the first tied suspended game this season for the Avalanche.
Down the stretch they come: Kinston did not finish its nine-inning game with Potomac yesterday either. The Indians trailed in the sixth when weather stopped the game so the Nationals were deemed victorious. So, Salem trails Kinston for first place by just four games. Myrtle Beach eked past Wilmington 10-8 so the Avs are a game and a half ahead of the Pelicans for second.
Road is where the heart is: The Avalanche has charted an 11-day course from Frederick to Winston-Salem and Wilmington. Salem will be gone from the 21st of August until September 1st. When the journey is over, the Avalanche will have traveled 1148.41 miles (according to the fine folks at Mapquest).
Helpful hands: The Warthogs committed three errors Sunday night in the finale in Salem. The Avalanche is 30-7 this season when the opposition makes at least two errors.
1c: Avalanche left-hander Chris Blazek finished the game Sunday for his seventh save in seven tries this season. Salem's two previous closers, Sammy Gervacio and Ryan McKeller have been promoted to AA. Blazek has not allowed a run since a July 25th loss to Wilmington. In his last 10 appearances (12 innings), Blazek has allowed just four hits and walked four while striking 10 out.
Upcoming Probables
8/23 @ Frederick 7:00 PM RHP Sean Walker (2-1, 3.47) vs RHP David Hernandez (7-10, 4.78)
