
Avalanche to host breast cancer awareness night

SALEM, VA - The Salem Avalanche, Advanced Class-A affiliate of the Houston Astros, will be hosting a Breast Cancer Awareness Night at Lewis-Gale Medical Center Field at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium on Saturday, September 1, 2007. The 7:07 PM ballgame will feature all Avalanche players and coaching staff members wearing pink jerseys to be auctioned off during the game. All proceeds from the auction will go to Susan G. Komen for the Cure Greater Roanoke Valley Affiliate.
"The Avalanche is proud to host Breast Cancer Awareness Night," said John Katz, Avalanche VP / General Manager. "Early detection is critical to fighting this horrible disease, and if we can help save just one life by bringing this cause to the forefront of our promotions, we've helped do our part."
Susan G. Komen for the Cure was created in 1982 by Nancy Brinker, surviving sister of a breast cancer victim Susan Komen. Susan G. Komen for the Cure is the world's largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists. Susan G. Komen for the Cure has invested nearly $1 billion in the fight against cancer and is the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.
For the past 25 years, Susan G. Komen for the Cure has played a critical role in every major advance in the fight against breast cancer - more early detection, more hope, more research and more survivors.
Some facts about breast cancer:
- Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women.
- Breast cancer is second only to lung cancer in cancer deaths among women.
- Nearly 200,000 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer in the US in 2007.
Proper screening can save lives. Susan G. Komen for the Cure recommends the following screening guidelines:
- Clinical breast exams by a health care provider at least every 3 years starting at age 20, and every year after 40.
- Mammograms every year starting at age 40.
- Breast self-exams every month starting by age 20.
