Five for Fighting: The Dash notched their fifth consecutive win last night with a 3-2 victory in the series opener against the Pelicans. A scoreless game until the third, Winston-Salem was able to bring home a pair of runs in that frame when Brady Shoemaker hit a two-out single to score Kyle Colligan and Tyler Saladino to give Winston-Salem the lead. Myrtle Beach brought in single runs in the fourth and sixth innings to tie the game once again. The game turned in the Dash's favor in the eighth inning against new pitcher Ryan Kelly, whose wildness hurt him at the start. He walked Saladino on five pitches before throwing a wild pitch to get the go-ahead run into scoring position. Jared Mitchell then delivered an RBI double to left field to snap the tie and give Winston the lead for good. The win streak is tied for the longest the Dash have put together this season; Winston also won five in a row from May 6 through May 10 against Lynchburg and Potomac.
New World Order: The Dash's win, in combination with Kinston's 4-0 loss, propelled Winston-Salem into first place in the Southern Division. The Dash sit one-half game better than the Indians, 1.5 games in front of the Pelicans, and five games ahead of the Salem Red Sox, who lost to Lynchburg last night. Today marks the first time since April 16 that Winston has been alone in first place. Overall, the Dash are 51-53, marking the first time the team has been within two games of .500 since winning on June 7 in Myrtle Beach.
The Mitch That They Can't Scratch: Jared Mitchell continued his hot hitting on the recent home stand last night in Myrtle Beach. His RBI double broke the tie game and delivered the Dash a victory. Over the last eight games, he is batting .400 (12 for 30). He is tied for first in the Carolina League in triples (7) and is tied for second in doubles (27) this season.
âMaul of America: Ryan Kussmaul earned his fourth save of the season last night with a perfect ninth inning. He struck out the last two batters he faced to continue his terrific season. Kussmaul leads all Carolina League relievers with 14.17 strikeouts per nine innings, more than three full K's more than second-place Sean Gleason (10.84). He is second among all full-season minor leaguers in the category. Kussmaul is second on the Dash in strikeouts (74) despite only ranking sixth among all 2011 Winston players in innings pitched (47.0).
Grand Home Furnishings: Brad Furnish put forth his best performance of the season last night in a no-decision, allowing one run on three hits over five innings. He also picked off a runner who was not stealing at first base, joining Joe Serafin as the only Dash hurlers to accomplish the feat this season. Before leaving with an apparent hand injury in the sixth inning, Furnish had efficiently shut down the Pelicans. He threw just two of his 35 pitches in the first three innings for balls and finished his night with 44 pitches, 37 for strikes. Making the outing even more impressive was that he had not pitched in a ballgame in almost exactly two weeks. Furnish had yo-yoed between Winston-Salem and Birmingham and had not gotten into a ballgame since July 16 at Lynchburg.
Gacplosions In The Sky: Ian Gac leads the Carolina League with 27 home runs and is tied for fourth in all of minor league baseball in the category. He has ten more home runs that any other player in the CL and his 77 RBI are 11 more than second place. Gac is also first in the CL in games played (104), first in at bats (389), tied for third in hits (105), tief for second in doubles (27), first in slugging percentage (.548), first in extra-base hits (54), first in runs scored (68), first in total bases (213), and first in HR/AB ratio (1/14.41). He is on pace to hit 36 home runs this season which would surpass his previous career-high of 32 in 2008. He has 154 career homers in nine professional seasons.
Today's Opposing Starter: LHP Miguel De Los Santos (2-2, 2.89) makes his seventh appearance of the season for Myrtle Beach and sixth start. He got the win against the Dash on July 7, throwing five shutout innings at BB&T Ballpark. De Los Santos started the season with AA Frisco where he went 1-3 with an 8.04 ERA in six starts. His lone victory was in a five inning scoreless start on April 22 against Corpus Christi (Astros). He was placed on the disabled in May with biceps tendonitis and on June 23 made one start for the Arizona League Rangers (3 IP, 4 H, ER, 7 K) before coming to Myrtle Beach. De Los Santos came into the season ranked by Baseball America as the tenth-best prospect in the Rangers organization. He was signed as a free agent in 2006 out of the Dominican Republic and split his first three years between the Rangers' Dominican Summer League and Arizona League affiliates before visa issues kept him in the DSL in 2009. Last year he split time between Rookie Spokane and low-A Hickory and averaged 14.3 strikeouts per nine innings, prompting the Rangers to put him on the 40-man roster during the offseason. His changeup is ranked by Baseball America as the best in the organization, and he also throws a low-90s fastball and a curveball.
