Kinston Indians News Release
Tribe Talk.... Tim Melville Show - Tim Melville was nearly all the Blue Rocks needed Friday night to send the K-Tribe to it's fifth straight loss. Melville hurled seven shutout innings and received a three run, first inning bomb from John Whittleman to provide the offense in a 4-0 Kinston loss. The Indians only had three base runners all night. Casey Frawley walked in the first; Jesus Aguilar and Tyler Cannon managed back-to-back fifth inning singles to break up Melville's no hit bid.
Roster Wrap - Kinston's roster has been in flux lately. Reigning League Player of the Week, Abner Abreu has been traded to the Cubs with another minor leaguer for MLB outfielder Kosuke Fukudome. Knuckleballer Steve Wright was placed on the inactive list and on the same day Kinston received pitcher Mike Rayl and power hitting first baseman Jesus Aguilar from Low-A Lake County. On July 29th, Chase Burnette was sent to Lake County, swapping spots with outfielder Jordan Casas, who was promoted.
Hammerin' Holt - Kinston Outfielder and leadoff man Tyler Holt has hit his stride of late, rebounding from a mid-season slump. Holt is batting .322 in the month with 4 doubles and 2 triples. He has walked 13 times for a July obp of .402, his patience at the plate has helped to make him the league's best at reaching base with a 2011 obp of .376. His 62 walks are tied for first in the Carolina League. In 24 June appearances, Holt batted .205.
Hit Me - Kinston blistered the Blue Rocks for 29 runs over the weekend, with double digit hits in two of the three games. At Winston-Salem Kinston has managed just 11 runs on 27 hits. Kinston managed to win just four games in Winston-Salem over the last two seasons.
Comeback Continued - The last five Kinston victories have been of the come-from-behind variety. That includes the current four game winning streak at home. The improbable stat dates to July 18th. Kinston has 24 comeback wins in 2011 and seven in July.
One Run Magic - The K-tribe has pushed its league best record in one run games to 25-11. When scoring first, Kinston also has the Carolina League's top mark, 32-10. Kinston has eight wins over its last nine games at home.
Homer Happy - Kinston's offense is warming up in July with 21 home runs in the month, third in the league. The team's previous monthly high was 18 June jacks. Abner Abreu is responsible for eight of the team's July home runs. Kinston has ten home runs since July 16th.
