Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans could not recover from a nightmarish second inning. Three bases-loaded walks put Winston-Salem on the board and the Dash never looked back as they cruised to a 6-1 win over the Birds at BB&T Coastal Field on Saturday. The Dash only had five hits, but scored six times thanks to nine walks issued by Myrtle Beach pitchers.
De Los Santos showed no signs of trouble in setting down the first four batters he faced, including three strikeouts in a row, but things fell apart quickly. Juan Silverio singled with one out in the second before De Los Santos walked the next three hitters, the last being Kyle Colligan with the bases loaded, to give the Dash the game's first run.
Two batters later, Tyler Saladino drew another bases-loaded walk to force in another tally and knock De Los Santos (2-3) out of the game. Against new pitcher Kasey Kiker, Jared Mitchell followed with another free pass that forced in yet another run to make it a 3-0 lead.
The Dash plated two more against Kiker in the fifth on a Brady Shoemaker sacrifice fly and an Ian Gac RBI single. After Kiker's two and two-thirds innings, Trevor Hurley tossed another two and two-thirds, allowing one run on a sixth-inning sacrifice fly by Dan Wagner. Zach Osborne worked the final two innings out of the Myrtle Beach bullpen. The nine bases on balls allowed by Pelicans' hurlers were one short of the team's season high of ten, which came on April 14 in Frederick.
For the second straight time, Myrtle Beach could not solve Winston-Salem starter Matt Wickswat. The lefty, who shut out the Birds at home for seven innings on July 8, posted six more scoreless frames before allowing a Zach Zaneski RBI single in the seventh. Although he has a 4.63 ERA in his other four starts, Wickswat (5-1) has held the Pelicans to one run on six hits in 14 innings this year, walking two and striking out 15.
In the lone bright spot for Myrtle Beach, the Birds' defense did not commit an error for the sixth straight game, setting a new season-high for consecutive errorless contests. The five-game streak entering the night, which started Monday against Lynchburg, had matched the one from exactly three months earlier, April 25-29.
In tomorrow's season finale the Pelicans look to avoid being swept for the second straight weekend, they also lost all three games in Frederick July 22-24. Wilfredo Boscan (3-8, 4.43) goes for the Birds on Sunday against Cameron Bayne (9-4, 3.33) of the Dash. First pitch at BB&T Coastal Field is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. Tickets for all Pelicans home games, including the postseason, are available at the BB&T Coastal Field box office, MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, and by phone at 843-918-6000 or 877-918-TIXX.
