Double and Nothing: The Salem Red Sox continued their recent mastery over the Dash last night, doubling up Winston 8-4 at LewisGale Field. The Red Sox scored all eight of their runs on ten of their 12 hits between the third and fifth innings en route to the rout. Chris Hernandez did not allow a hit until Kyle Colligan ¬â¢s fifth inning home run and picked up his second straight win against Winston-Salem. Five Red Sox batters (Shannon Wilkerson, Kolbrin Vitek, Jorge Padron, Bryce Brentz, and Zach Gentile) recorded multi-hit games as Salem won the series. The Dash, which have fallen four games behind first place Kinston, will try to avoid the series sweep tonight in the finale.
Wake Up Time: Chris Hernandez was 4.2 innings into a no-hit bid before Kyle Colligan ended the no-no and the shutout with a solo home run. The homer was Colligan ¬â¢s fourth of the year and kept up his strong pace since reclaiming an everyday role in the Dash ¬â¢s lineup. Since Jose Martinez was promoted last Tuesday and Colligan became the full-time left fielder once again, the Houston native is batting .300 (6 for 20). He is batting .204 after spending 45 of 51 games played hitting less than .200.
Putting the ¬ÅK ¬Â in Kussmaul: Ryan Kussmaul continued his strong stretch of relief last night, striking out two batters in a scoreless sixth inning. Kussmaul has not allowed an earned run over his last nine appearances. In 15 innings over this period, he has six hits, walked four, struck out 27, and held hitters to a .122 average (6 for 49). He has lowered his season ERA nearly two full runs since June 7 from 5.11 to 3.18. Kussmaul leads all Carolina League relievers in strikeouts per nine innings with 13.39, more than one better than Keys closer Sean Gleason. Kussmaul is second on the Dash in strikeouts (59) despite only ranking eighth among all 2011 Winston players in innings pitched (39.2).
Mercedes-Brentz: Salem right fielder Bryce Brentz continued his assault against Winston-Salem pitching last night, going 2 for 4 with a two-run home run. He went 3 for 4 the night before with two doubles, three RBI, and a run scored. Brentz has felt very comfortable against Dash pitching this season. In eight games against Winston, the former supplemental first rounder is hitting .424 (14 for 33) with three doubles, a triple, five home runs, 12 RBI, and nine runs scored. He has hit five of the seven homers that Salem has swatted against the Dash this season. His five dingers are the most any Carolina Leaguer has hit against Winston-Salem.
Book of Daniel: Dash second baseman Daniel Wagner collected another base hit yesterday, going 1 for 4 with a run scored. Wagner has quietly warmed up over the last month after a dreary first half of the season offensively. Entering play on June 13, Wagner was hitting .210 for the season; since then, he is batting .308 (24 for 78) to raise his season average to .235. That mark is the highest Wagner ¬â¢s average has been since May 7, when it was .239.
Staff Infection: Jake Petricka ¬â¢s four-inning start continued an unfortunate pattern for Winston-Salem ¬â¢s undermanned starting pitchers. In six of the last eight games, the Dash ¬â¢s starter has lasted less than five innings, putting a heavy burden on the bullpen. Since July 2, Winston ¬â¢s relievers have thrown 42.1 of 71 total innings (60%). Three of the Dash ¬â¢s starters are currently on the disabled list (Ryan Buch, Justin Collop, and Andre Rienzo) and no starter has yet been named for Wednesday ¬â¢s series opener at Lynchburg.
Bad Medicine: Although the Red Sox have not been a strong hitting squad for much of the season, lately they have seemed to hit their stride against the Dash. Going back to last weekend ¬â¢s series between the teams at BB&T Ballpark, Salem has hit .315 (67 for 213) and scored 46 runs in its last six games against Winston-Salem. The Red Sox have won five of those six matchups and now lead the overall season series 7-5.
Today ¬â¢s Opposing Starter: RHP Ryan Pressly (4-8, 4.41) makes his 17th start of the season for the Red Sox and second against the Dash this season. In his most recent start, Pressly got no decision on July 6 against Wilmington. He threw six innings and gave up two runs (earned) on four hits in an eventual 3-2 win. He got the win in three of his first four starts, registering an ERA of 2.33 in 19.1 innings in his first four outings. Since that point, he has lost eight of his nine decisions including four straight, even though he ¬â¢s lasted six or more innings in his last three appearances. Pressly was originally drafted in the 11th round of the 2007 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Marcus High School in Texas. He spent his first two years in the organization in short-season ball with the GCL Red Sox and then the Lowell Spinners. In 2010, he made 26 appearances (24 starts) for low-A Greenville and went 5-7 with a 3.72 ERA. With the drive, he held opponents to three runs or fewer in 22 of his 24 starts and was seventh among Red Sox minor leaguers in ERA.
