Haughian Fans 12 in Keys Win

July 11, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Frederick Keys News Release

On one of the hottest days of the Carolina League season, it was Keys left-handed pitcher Nick Haughian turning up the heat. Haughian fanned a career-high 12 batters and the Keys ran away and hid in a 9-1 win over Kinston on Monday afternoon. The strikeout total was the highest for a Keys pitcher in 2011.

Haughian (6-4) started the game strong striking out the first two batters before walking Indians third baseman Adam Abraham. He then quickly picked Abraham off to end the inning. Another baserunner would not reach until the fourth inning when Haughian had already tallied seven strikeouts. Haughian struck out seven of the first nine batters he faced and had ten punchouts through five innings. He registered a strikeout in the sixth and seventh innings to set the mark at 12. His past career-high had been ten.

Offensively the Keys did not take Haughian's mastery for granted. Frederick gained the lead on a two-out RBI-single from center fielder Miguel Abreu. The base hit gave the Keys a 1-0 lead and extended Abreu's hitting streak to a league-high 16 games. That ties a Carolina league season-high with Myrtle Beach outfielder Ryan Strausborger (June 1-16).

The Keys blew the game open in the fourth inning when right fielder Jacob Julius homered to right-center field to put Frederick atop, 2-0. For Julius it was his seventh home run of the year. The Keys would load the bases with no outs and first baseman Tyler Townsend singled home two runs to up the lead to 4-0 and the rout was on. Frederick scored four runs sending all nine batters to the plate in the fourth.

Julius went 3-for-4 with the home run and two RBI's. Bobby Stevens had two hits and three runs scored. Left-handed reliever Chris Petrini threw two scoreless innings to close out the win. The Keys, now 51-36 overall, have the best record in the Carolina league once again. After a day off the Keys take to the road to face the Wilmington Blue Rocks for the first of four games at Frawley Stadium. The opener is Wednesday, July 13th at 7:05 p.m. Coverage will begin at 6:45 p.m. on 1450-AM The Source.

The Keys return home for Going Green Night presented by Frederick County Department of Solid Waste Management Friday, July 22nd at 7:00 p.m. as the Myrtle Beach Pelicans come to town. For tickets contact the Keys Box Office at 1-877-8-GO-KEYS or purchase online at frederickkeys.com.
