Former Pelicans Take Part in Futures Game

Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
PHOENIX, AZ - The XM All-Star Futures Game is a great opportunity for fans to become familiar with the stars of tomorrow. In 2010, the Myrtle Beach faithful already knew of the stardom of Julio Teheran and Arodys Vizcaino, but in Sunday's Futures Game the two hurlers shined on a grand stage against fellow top prospects as Major League Baseball began All-Star Week festivities at Chase Field.
Teheran, a 20-year-old righty who has dominated at Triple-A and made his big league debut for the Braves this year, was tabbed by World manager Luis Gonzalez to start the game against the U.S. team. He was greeted rudely by the leadoff batter in the bottom of the first, as second baseman Jason Kipnis (ranked as the third-best prospect in the Cleveland Indians' organization by Baseball America) drilled a 3-2 pitch out to right field for a home run that put the U.S. up 1-0.
Unfazed, Teheran set down the next three batters to end his day after one inning of work. That included a flyout from Orioles top farmhand and current Frederick Key Manny Machado and a strikeout of the most highly-touted prospect in the minor leagues, Bryce Harper.
A Colombia native, Teheran went 4-4 with a 2.98 ERA in ten starts for the Pelicans in 2010. He racked up 12 or more strikeouts in three of his starts, including a remarkable outing on May 31 in which he whiffed 14 Frederick Keys to tie the franchise-record. Entering 2011 as Atlanta's highest-rated prospect, he's posted a 9-1 mark with a 1.79 ERA for Triple-A Gwinnett and earned a call-up to the bigs on May 7 in Philadelphia. In two spot starts for the Braves, he is 0-1 with a 5.19 ERA.
Teheran was not the only 2010 Pelican to participate in Sunday's contest. Right-hander Arodys Vizcaino came on in relief to pitch the seventh inning for the World team. The 20-year-old tossed a dominant 1-2-3 frame, needing only six pitches to retire the side. For the Birds last year Vizcaino made three starts, all no decisions, as he put up a 4.61 ERA. He began the 2011 campaign in the Carolina League with the Lynchburg Hillcats before earning a May promotion to Double-A Mississippi.
A pair of Texas Rangers farmhands took part in the game as well. Lefty Martin Perez is Baseball America's top Texas prospect and the ace for Double-A Frisco. He worked the fifth inning for the World team, allowing one run on two hits while walking one and striking out one. He was in line for the win after the World Futures rallied in the seventh to turn a 3-0 deficit into a 4-3 lead.
That rally was capped with a pinch-hit RBI triple by Jurickson Profar, who is ranked as the second-best prospect in the Texas system behind Perez and has starred for low-A Hickory. The 18-year-old from Curacao was the youngest of the 49 players chosen to go to Phoenix. Profar, who could suit up for the Pelicans in the near future, played the rest of the game at shortstop for the World team and finished 1-for-2 at the plate.
Three current Carolina Leaguers played Sunday. Machado finished 0-for-2 after starting at shortstop for the U.S. team and fellow Frederick Key Jonathan Schoop entered in the sixth for the World, singled in his only plate appearance and finished the game at second base. Kinston Indians ace Drew Pomeranz started the sixth for the U.S. squad and was rocked as he could not get out of the inning. He allowed four runs while recording only two outs and was on the hook for the loss before the U.S. rallied in the eighth to pull out a 6-4 win.
The Pelicans wrap up a ten-game road trip in Wilmington tonight at 7:05 p.m. After finally returning home, Myrtle Beach opens up an eight-game homestand with the first of four against the Salem Red Sox on Wednesday, July 13. First pitch at BB&T Coastal Field is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. for all four games of the series from Wednesday through Saturday. Tickets for all Pelicans home games are available at the BB&T Coastal Field box office, MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, and by phone at 843-918-6000 or 877-918-TIXX.
