Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

- LHP Robbie Ross (8-2, 2.36) at LHP Justin Marks (4-6, 4.59) -

FIRING BLANKS: Sunday's middle game with Wilmington, a 3-0 defeat at the hands of the Blue Rocks, was a refrain that's becoming all too common for the Pelicans in the second half. After being shut out just once in the season's first half, Sunday's defeat was the fourth time Myrtle Beach has been blanked since the All-Star Break. The Pelicans suffered a 7-0 series-concluding loss at the hands of the Salem Red Sox on June 29, followed by a 1-0 loss to the Kinston Indians two days later in the middle game of three. Just two nights prior to Wilmington's shutout win, the Winston-Salem Dash blanked the Birds on just four hits in a rain-shortened 5-0, eight-inning win. Since starting the the second half 5-2, the Pelicans have dropped eight of 11.

PRINCE OF PAIN: In his first plate appearance in the top of the first inning Sunday, outfielder Jared Prince was plunked in the left arm by a Tyler Sample fastball. The otherwise unremarkable moment became notable, however, because of Prince's torrid pace in getting drilled by pitches. Through the season's first two months, the former Washington State Cougar had been hit just three times by opponents. In the month of June alone, Prince was hit 11 times to vault him near the top of the league leaderboard. Prince hass already been plunked twice in July, and Sunday's hit-by-pitch moved him into a first-place tie with Frederick's Tyler Kolodny for most times being hit by a pitch this season with 16. Kolodny's 16 HBPs have stood at that number since June 16 as the Keys' first baseman/designated hitter has recently been out of action due to a wrist injury.
