Gac Jack Backs Dash: Winston-Salem started the second half of the season the way it ended the first half, with a hard-fought one-run win on the road. The Dash bested the Keys 2-1 on Thursday in a game that saw all the scoring come on a pair of home runs. In his Carolina League debut, former third overall draft pick Manny Machado hit a solo home run off Cameron Bayne in the third inning to give Frederick a 1-0 lead. Winston grabbed the lead in the sixth when Ian Gac hit a two-run homer out to left. The one-run cushion proved to be enough for the Dash, as Bayne allowed just two singles to the last 15 Keys he faced, retiring the final eight. Brandon Kloess picked up the two-inning save by retiring all six men he faced, as Winston ended the game by retiring the final 14 Frederick batters. The win was the Dash's fourth in the last six games.

Philanthropic Thunder: Ian Gac's two-run home run aided a struggling Dash offense last night, as Winston-Salem cracked nine base hits but could not get a one with a man in scoring position all night. The Dash five left runners in scoring position, including one in each of the first three innings. Gac's home run was his league-leading 18th of the season. His name is scattered all over the Carolina League leaders; he is first in games played (71), third in at bats (268), second in RBI (49), fourth in doubles (20), fourth in slugging percentage (.534), first in extra-base hits (38), first in runs scored (50), first in total bases (143), and first in HR/AB ratio (1/14.89).

Cameron Outdoor Stadium: Dash RHP Cameron Bayne earned his seventh win of the season last night, tying him with last night's losing pitcher Nathan Moreau and Myrtle Beach's Robbie Ross for the most victories in the Carolina League. Bayne made it two consecutive terrific starts against the Keys, as he has allowed just two runs over 15 innings in his last two outings, both against Frederick. While his record is only 2-2 against the Keys this season, Bayne owns a 1.67 ERA and a .206 opponent batting average against the baby birds.

Yesterday was Thursday. Today it is Friday: Strangely, the Dash went the entire first half of the season without winning on a Thursday. Yesterday, Winston-Salem picked up its first Thursday win of 2011 to improve its record on the day to 1-8. Thursday remains the only day of the week that the Dash do not have multiple wins. Friday is one of the two days of the week that Winston has a winning record. The Dash are 6-5 on Fridays and 8-2 on Sundays.

Recovery Summer: Jose Martinez' first full healthy season as a professional continues to proceed swimmingly. Martinez missed about two full seasons worth of baseball from 2008-2010 after a series of right knee injuries that required three separate surgeries. Café went 2 for 4 last night to raise his batting average to .305, good for fourth in the Carolina League. After a six-game stretch when he went 1 for 23 that spanned the end of May and beginning of June, Martinez has hit in 13 of his last 15 games. He is batting .333 (21 for 63) during this period with ten RBI. His 11 RBI in June are the most he has had in any month this season.

Ty High: After missing the first month of the season with a broken hand, Tyler Saladino is starting take off offensively. He went 2 for 4 with two doubles and a walk last night and has a base hit in nine of his last 11 games and a multi-hit game in six of the last ten contests he has played in. Since June 5, Saladino is batting .340 (16 for 47) with six doubles, one homer, seven RBI, and five runs scored. He has raised his batting average 52 points to .237 during this period.

Key Clubbed: The Dash return north for the first series of the second half as the team continues its three-gamer against the Keys at Harry Grove Stadium. Frederick has had its way with Winston-Salem this season, winning all three series that the teams have played and seven of 11 games overall. The Dash lost two of three in Maryland last month to start a four-game losing streak against the Keys that was snapped by last Wednesday's 9-1 win at BB&T Ballpark. Frederick won the first half Northern Division title to clinch a spot in the playoffs for the second straight year. The Keys' run to the playoffs could be further enhanced by the addition of Manny Machado to the roster. Machado was the third overall pick in last year's draft and the shortstop garnered All-Star honors in the South Atlantic League for the Delmarva Shorebirds, hitting .276 with six home runs and 24 RBI in 38 games.

Oh, Nuts: The Carolina League lost its third consecutive All-Star Game to the California League at the home of the Modesto Nuts on Tuesday night. The Golden Staters won it 6-1, mostly on the back of a four-run third inning against the Keys' Bobby Bundy. Four players represented Winston-Salem: Ian Gac went 1 for 4; Andy Wilkins was 0 for 2; Jose Martinez went 1 for 2; and Andre Rienzo pitched 0.2 scoreless innings. Gac and Wilkins also participated in the home run derby. Wilkins went homerless, while Gac made it to the finals but lost to Lancaster's Kody Hinze. Gac hit two homers in the finals and five overall.

Today's Opposing Starter: RHP Ryohei Tanaka (5-0, 2.43) makes his seventh start of the season and third against the Dash. He is 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA against Winston-Salem, getting the win just over a week ago at BB&T Ballpark after allowing one run on three hits over five innings. He started the year coming out of the bullpen for AA Bowie before being sent down to Frederick, where he has made 11 total appearances. With Bowie, he had no record but registered a 3.09 ERA in six appearances (11.2 IP). Originally from Ishikawa, Japan, Tanaka signed with the Baltimore Orioles organization in 2009 and has spent most of his time with Bowie. In 2009 he went 4-4 with a 3.00 ERA in 21 appearances (12 starts). As a reliever, Tanaka did not allow a run in 13 innings. Last year with the BaySox he also split time between the bullpen and starting rotation, going 8-12 with a 5.64 ERA. Tanaka previously played for the Chiba Lotte Marines in Japan's Pacific League under then-manager and current ESPN Analyst Bobby Valentine.
