Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
Wilmington, DE - A crucial error in the bottom of the eighth leads to two unearned runs against the Hillcats, and proves to be the difference in the game as the 'Cats fall 4-2 in Wilmington.
Neither side was able to score through the first four frames Friday night.
The Blue Rocks would strike first in the bottom of the fifth with the bases loaded and two outs. Clean-up batter Nick Francis singled to right field and two runs came home. Francis rounded first a bit too far on the RBI single and was caught in a run down to end the inning.
LHP Noel Arguelles, Wilmington's starter, went six innings for just the second time this season. He held the Hillcats scoreless through those six frames, leaving the game with Blue Rocks leading 2-0.
The Hillcats battled back as soon as the Blue Rocks went to the bullpen. RHP Dusty Odenbach entered the game. Adam Milligan singled, Joey Terdoslavich flew out, and Joe Leonard walked to put runners at first and second with one out for Geraldo Rodriguez. Rodriguez skied one deep in to center field. Wilmington's center fielder, Yem Prades, lost the ball in the air and it fell just in front of the warning track. Milligan came in to score, but Joe Leonard was held up at third base. Rodriguez ran into Leonard at third, forcing Leonard off the bag and he was tagged out. L.V. Ware popped up to end the inning with the Hillcats down 2-1.
Lynchburg tied the game in eighth. Christian Bethancourt singled home Keenan Wiley.
RHP David Hale came in for the Hillcats in the eighth with the score 2-2. Hale got himself into a jam with runners at first and third with two outs. He induced a ground ball to third that should have ended the inning, but Leonard committed an error allowing the go ahead run to score. The next batter, Jose Bonilla, single home another run to put the Blue Rocks up 4-2.
The 'Cats put runners at second and third with nobody out in the ninth, but two strikeouts and a line out to center field ended the inning without a run coming home and the Hillcats lost 4-2.
Odenbach (2-0) blew the save, giving up two runs in the seventh and eighth innings, but earned the win. Hale (1-2) suffered the loss allowing a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth. Michael Mariot stranded two in a scoreless ninth to record his third save of the season.
The Hillcats fell to 0-2 in the second half, while the Blue Rocks improved to 2-0.
The series finale will start tomorrow at 6:05 pm at Frawley Stadium in Wilmington. RHP Aaron Shafer (1-0) will start for the Hillcats against RHP Jake Odorizzi (5-2) for the Blue Rocks. The Hillcats On-Deck Show powered by Honda/Suzuki of Lynchburg will go on the air at 5:40 pm. Listen live to all the action on 105.5 KD Country and online at lynchburg-hillcats.com.
